A religious cult is a group with excessive devotion to a leader or ideology, using manipulative techniques to isolate and control people. Here are just some of the common warning signs of a cult:
In cult-like churches, leadership is not accountable — it’s sacred. If you question the pastor or elders, or leaders, you’re seen as rebellious or under attack. Many use verses like “Do not touch the Lord’s anointed” (1 Chronicles 16:22) to silence healthy inquiry, ignoring the fact that biblical leaders were consistently corrected by prophets and even lay people.
Perhaps the most dangerous trait of cult-like churches is their ability to use the Bible as a weapon. Verses are taken out of context to support giving campaigns, silence critics, demand submission, or elevate the church brand. Scriptures are used not to glorify Jesus, but to justify the system — serving as PR for the church instead of a revelation of Christ.
Common examples:
- Malachi 3:10 used to demand tithes under guilt
- Touch not my anointed weaponized to shield leaders
- Do not forsake the assembly used to guilt people into constant attendance, even in burnout
When verses are cherry-picked to control, rather than interpreted faithfully in context, that’s spiritual abuse masquerading as Bible teaching.
If your salvation constantly feels at risk, or you’re told that leaving the church will result in curses, loss of calling, or judgment — be wary. That’s fear-based control, not gospel-centered teaching. Jesus didn’t scare people into following Him — He invited them into love and truth.
When a church believes it has the “purest doctrine,” the “truest worship,” or the “fresh move of God,” be cautious. This is a common rhetoric. It creates pride and dependency instead of humility and maturity.
Healthy faith invites questions. Cults do not. If asking hard questions makes you feel like a problem — or if people who question are labeled as bitter, divisive, or lacking faith — that’s a dangerous place. When a member raises issues with the leadership, it's common they would see the member as a threat and turn the tables against them. Jesus never condemned honest doubt.
The final sign? You’re scared to go. Not because you’d miss the community — but because you’re afraid of what God might do to you. If staying in your church feels like a survival strategy instead of a joy, you’re probably not under grace — you’re under spiritual bondage.

What makes an INCult member believe in the "Church administration" instead of God directly?
Wala lang tinry ko lang, yung iba kong kamag-anak na INC naka-deactivate. Praying na matauhan sila sa kabaluktutan ng INC.
Others naman ay talagang pinaglalaban yung katangahan nila. Just sharing. 😁
