Keeping Act 2 Merc alive on Hell difficulty?

Following various tips people provided on various forums, I made this fairly cheap merc setup with Insight (normal poleaxe), Treachery (exceptional cuirass), and Vampire Gaze, but even on player count 1, he keeps dropping like a fly, against Mephisto especially. Extra mana is nice, but how do I prevent merc maintenance from becoming a major time and money sink?

Returning player here: when does Magic Find trigger?

Having returned to the game recently, and wanting to take the endgame loot grind a little bit more seriously than before, I've been wondering when should I use my Magic find weapon swap (Ali Baba + Rhyme)? Does the boost to item rarity apply when I swap just as the enemy is about to die, or do I have to keep them out for longer?
