What were the most downloaded apps globally in 2025?
We pulled the 2025 global app rankings from AppTweak's Market Intelligence and the headline is striking. ChatGPT took the #1 spot among the most downloaded apps globally with 845.3M app downloads and +156.8% year-over-year growth. Instagram (#2) and TikTok (#3) followed, but both declined. Seven of the top 10 apps actually lost app downloads year-over-year.
If you market an app at scale, this is a useful set of data points about where the install ceiling sits right now.

3 patterns app marketers should pay attention to
1. AI assistants are now a top-of-stack category
ChatGPT is #1 globally. Google Gemini ranked #16 and also posted triple-digit growth. AppTweak's data shows AI assistants are converging on a chat-first interface that handles tasks previously spread across multiple apps. That is pulling acquisition demand toward a new category and pulling it away from legacy ones.
2. Portfolio strategies are outperforming single-app growth
Bytedance/TikTok Pte. Ltd. and Meta together hold five of the top 10 positions through combinations of flagship and "Lite" apps. TikTok Lite grew +77.2% while flagship TikTok declined -12.0%. The split shows that strong publishers are capturing different user segments through specialized apps, not just one global product.
3. The install ceiling is moving down for legacy social and entertainment
Seven of the top 10 declined. Instagram -19.0%, Facebook -23.5%, WhatsApp -18.2%, CapCut -19.1%. Netflix and Temu, also in the top 10, both declined. AppTweak's data points to a saturation pattern across mature categories.
A note on app publisher geography
All 10 of the most downloaded apps globally are owned by publishers headquartered in either the United States or Singapore. App leadership is highly concentrated, which is worth keeping in mind when benchmarking against the top of the chart.
