What were the most downloaded apps globally in 2025?

We pulled the 2025 global app rankings from AppTweak's Market Intelligence and the headline is striking. ChatGPT took the #1 spot among the most downloaded apps globally with 845.3M app downloads and +156.8% year-over-year growth. Instagram (#2) and TikTok (#3) followed, but both declined. Seven of the top 10 apps actually lost app downloads year-over-year.

If you market an app at scale, this is a useful set of data points about where the install ceiling sits right now.

The top 10 most downloaded apps globally in 2025

According to AppTweak's Market Intelligence:

  1. ChatGPT, 845.3M app downloads, +156.8%
  2. Instagram, 762.3M, -19.0%
  3. TikTok, 545.8M, -12.0%
  4. WhatsApp Messenger, 541.4M, -18.2%
  5. CapCut, 501.1M, -19.1%
  6. TikTok Lite, 433.8M, +77.2%
  7. Netflix, 415.6M, -11.5%
  8. Facebook, 408.2M, -23.5%
  9. Temu, 390.0M, -8.2%
  10. Snapchat, 386.6M, -0.4%

Total app downloads across the top 500 apps declined -5.2% year-over-year in 2025, reversing 2024's +2.3% expansion.

3 patterns app marketers should pay attention to

1. AI assistants are now a top-of-stack category

ChatGPT is #1 globally. Google Gemini ranked #16 and also posted triple-digit growth. AppTweak's data shows AI assistants are converging on a chat-first interface that handles tasks previously spread across multiple apps. That is pulling acquisition demand toward a new category and pulling it away from legacy ones.

2. Portfolio strategies are outperforming single-app growth

Bytedance/TikTok Pte. Ltd. and Meta together hold five of the top 10 positions through combinations of flagship and "Lite" apps. TikTok Lite grew +77.2% while flagship TikTok declined -12.0%. The split shows that strong publishers are capturing different user segments through specialized apps, not just one global product.

3. The install ceiling is moving down for legacy social and entertainment

Seven of the top 10 declined. Instagram -19.0%, Facebook -23.5%, WhatsApp -18.2%, CapCut -19.1%. Netflix and Temu, also in the top 10, both declined. AppTweak's data points to a saturation pattern across mature categories.

A note on app publisher geography

All 10 of the most downloaded apps globally are owned by publishers headquartered in either the United States or Singapore. App leadership is highly concentrated, which is worth keeping in mind when benchmarking against the top of the chart.

Questions for the community

  • If you're working on a legacy social or entertainment app, are you seeing the same install ceiling in your category?
  • For AI app marketers: are you noticing acquisition costs shifting now that ChatGPT has set a new top-of-chart benchmark?
  • Anyone running portfolio strategies (flagship + Lite variants) want to share how segmentation is working in practice?

What makes an ASO keyword research tool actually worth using in 2026?

There are a lot of ASO keyword research tools out there, but they're not all built the same. After a deep review of the leading platforms, here's what we think actually separates useful tools from ones that just look good on a feature list.

Data quality is the starting point

Not all keyword data is equally reliable, and the gap between tools can be significant.
For iOS, the most accurate tools pull directly from Apple's Search Popularity metric. For Google Play, you need to understand how the tool estimates volume, since no official source exists. Some platforms use sophisticated models that cross-reference Apple data and auto-suggestions. Others rely on far weaker signals and produce inconsistent results.
Before committing to any tool, verify:

  • How it sources keyword volume data (especially for Google Play)
  • How frequently data is updated (daily vs. weekly vs. monthly)
  • Database size and country/language coverage for your target markets

The features that actually move the needle

Beyond data accuracy, here's what to look for:

Keyword discovery depth — including semantic clustering. A good tool should turn one seed keyword into a broad, structured keyword list quickly. But in 2026, that's not enough on its own. App store search is shifting toward semantic interpretation, meaning platforms are increasingly evaluating intent behind a query, not just exact keyword matches. The best tools help you group keywords into semantic clusters by theme and user intent, not just surface long-tail variations. AppTweak, for example, offers 12+ keyword discovery tools covering seeds, competitors, categories, and clusters, including semantic and intent-based groupings.

You can use AppTweak to build your ASO keyword lists by semantic themes.

Advanced metrics beyond raw volume. Volume shows demand, but estimated organic installs per keyword and relevancy scores help you prioritize based on real impact. Tracking performance at the cluster level (average ranking and reach per theme) also gives a more stable signal than chasing individual keyword movements.

Competitor keyword intelligence. Seeing which high-value keywords your competitors rank for and you don't is one of the fastest ways to find gaps. Even better if the tool shows which semantic themes competitors are dominating, so you can identify positioning opportunities.

Rank tracking over time. Keyword research only matters if you can measure what actually changed after a metadata update. This is especially true when testing changes across a full semantic cluster, not just a single term.

Apple Ads integration. The best tools let you align organic keyword strategy with paid campaign data. High-performing Apple Ads terms are strong signals of user intent, which makes them useful inputs for your organic cluster prioritization too.

A quick overview of the main tools

  • AppTweak - Best for mid-to-large apps, agencies, multi-market teams. Key strengths: 12+ discovery tools, install-based metrics, Apple Ads alignment, data accuracy.
  • Asolytics - Best for indie devs, beginners. Budget-friendly, covers the basics.
  • ASO Mobile - Rank tracking focus. Basic monitoring.
  • App Radar - Basic ASO needs. Simple setup.

A real-world result: Wix

Wix used AppTweak's app store keyword research tools to run structured keyword optimization, including competitor gap analysis using the Position Map and ASO Timeline features. Within one month, Wix achieved a 257% increase in keywords ranked #1 on US Google Play and a 31% increase on the US App Store. Within four months, they secured #1 rankings for their three most important keywords: website builder, website creator, and website maker.
What's your current workflow for keyword research? Have you found that any specific feature (volume, difficulty, competitor gap analysis) drives the most impact for your app?

According to AppTweak's Market Intelligence data, the dating app category tells an interesting story: market leadership and growth momentum are two very different things.

The top 10, ranked by global app downloads

App App downloads (2025)
Tinder (United States) 63.7M
Bumble (United Kingdom) 29.2M
Hinge (United States) 21.3M
Badoo (Cyprus) 19.5M
Boo (United States) 17.7M
Omi (Hong Kong) 16.0M
Dating and Chat - iHappy (Czech Republic) 15.9M
happn (France) 12.8M
Grindr (United States) 12.3M
Kismia (Cyprus) 12.0M

Source: AppTweak Market Intelligence | App Store and Google Play | Jan-Dec 2025 | Global | Top 500 Dating apps

Three things that stand out

  • Tinder is dominant, but Hinge is growing faster in absolute terms. Tinder's 63.7M app downloads are more than double Bumble's. But Hinge grew by 25.4%, adding 4.3M app downloads year over year. That's slightly more than the 4.1M downloads Tinder added. Scale and momentum are pointing in different directions at the top.
  • Legacy apps are showing saturation signs. Bumble lost 6.8M app downloads (-19.0%), the largest absolute drop in the top 10. Badoo and iHappy also posted significant declines. Market position alone clearly doesn't guarantee continued user acquisition.
  • US-based publishers dominate. Nine of the top 20 most-downloaded dating apps come from US-based publishers, including the #1 and #3 spots. The top 10 collectively capture 31.6% of the total download share among the top 500 dating apps.

Product trends shaping the category in 2025

The data reflects a few clear directional shifts across the category:

  • Apps are moving away from endless swiping toward more curated, intent-driven matching. Features like daily picks, preference filters, and conversation starters are pushing users toward fewer but higher-quality interactions.
  • Profiles are getting richer, with voice notes, short videos, and structured prompts becoming more common. Authenticity signals (like verification badges) are also moving more prominently into the profile experience.
  • Safety and privacy controls are being embedded directly into discovery and messaging flows, not buried in settings menus.
  • Monetization is shifting toward outcome-based purchasing, where upsell prompts appear at high-intent moments like reconnecting with an expired match.

For marketers and developers in the dating space, these trends suggest that product differentiation and user experience are becoming more important than raw app download volume as a growth lever.
