My family can’t afford to pay for the wedding they want me to have.

Hey everyone.

So my fiance and I are just about ready to give up with wedding planning. We are 29 and just finished our phds and moved across the country AND went to a week long wedding in India. So needless to say we are kind of broke. And even with the savings I do have like I am just not about to blow it all on a 200 person wedding.

My parents said I should have a 100 person wedding to keep costs down. But they want to invite 47 people. Then my fiance wants to invite 54, and that’s not even including any friends at all! We couldn’t get the list Lower than 130 and everything online said do not do not do not over invite what your venue can handle. We also wanted to get married on a Thursday, venue would have been $5k, but they said that’s selfish because you’re asking people to take three days off work. So we picked a Sunday. Now the new venue is $10k and that’s too much, said my parents.

This doesn’t even include catering. And the thing is my finances family has plenty of cash but obviously it will insult my parents to just have them pay for the whole thing. And I get that.

I already bought a $5k dress, including a veil, which in retrospect was stupid. I guess I could just sell it but I feel like we have to do something! My fiance and I just cannot afford to throw a wedding and feed 150 people. Gahhh I have no idea what to do. Also my parents were going to pay for me to get a masters degree, and I got a fully funded PhD instead, so I don’t get how they have no cash to help pay for my wedding. Gahhhh! Help?
