Ok so i did have a chat with the ER team who was so wonderful but very busy so i didn’t get to ask all I wanted - I plan to call my normal vet tomorrow but wanted to see if I could get answers here
My 8mo F DSH kitten I rescued 6 weeks ago who was supposedly spayed until she wasn’t at her first appt. I had booked her spay for mid May but she ended up sick yesterday. She had an open pyometra that ended up in emergency surgery last night. She’s ok, she’s at home recovering.
She’s about 8lbs of pure sweetness. She got the surgery around 1am on Thursday morning, and picked her up at 2pm Thursday from vet. They used internal sutures and glue. Shes on Gqba and Onisor and Veraflox.
When we got home I tried to put her in her own room and she immediately tried climbing things, opening the door, and she got her cone off several times. She also kept trying to play with my other pets under the door.
So I took an extra large dog crate (the kind you can walk in when squatting) and put a blanket a cat bed a litter box and food and water in it, and put the whole thing in a bathroom away from a door, and she’s calmed down a lot and is mostly sleeping (although that’s also probably the Gaba).
She’s eating and drinking and pottying good. I’ve had to wipe some litter off of her scar gently and her cone but it otherwise looks really good I think no noticeable redness or anything atm.
My issue is my husband and I leave on a cruise on Monday and come back Friday. It’s for his best friends wedding and something we spent significant money on (although not as much as our kitty’s surgery lol) and we don’t want to miss it, but we want to make sure she’s ok.
Our current plan is we have our pet sitter coming on Saturday and we’re going to teach them how to medicate her (liquid not pill). She should only have her antibiotics left by the time they have to (Tuesday and Wednesday one dose each day) as we can do her Monday dose.
We plan to leave her with her cone on in the crate until we return currently separate from all animals in the bathroom.
Is this ok?
My concern is she’s going to get rowdy once the gaba is out on Monday combined with us not being around. I don’t want her to stress out or her to injure herself somehow in the crate.
But I worry if I give her a room so she’s not so cramped that I don’t have one that doesn’t have any furniture she could climb on it and get hurt in her scar, also and I can’t just let her out either because of the same plus 4 other animals.
My pet sitter also is sleeping at my house but has a job so he’s feeding pets, walking dogs, checking on cats in AM, returning on lunch to walk dogs and repeat, and then after work he’s staying until next morning.
I’m worried she may get her cone off once no Gaba during these time frames, do I need to get someone to check on her in the middle? This will be technically 4 days out from surgery. At what point I guess does the cone-off risk decrease? When she’s gotten her cone off she just sits there happily but I think that’s also the gaba.
I am also concerned she allows me to easily medicate her but I don’t know how she’ll be with the sitter hence the Saturday intro - the vet calls her spicy. Is this a big enough fear to warrant them planning to bring her to the vet for her dose if they can’t manage it? Would that be more stressful? I have faith but also I have some cats that even I struggle to medicate so I don’t want to not consider it.
Everyone around me is saying a lot of strays get spayed and released and many cats spend years in shelters smaller than her current little space but I feel awful and this feels bigger than a spay. We only got her 6 weeks ago and she only just started being social about two weeks ago.
I also have a second 8mo she is bonded with who’s so upset at me for not letting her in the bathroom, she’s been hissy at the door, but the vet warned me not to because she’ll groom her scar. Is she going to be ok while we’re out being separated? Like when I say bonded, the reason we learned our kitty was sick was because when I went to check on her her bestie basically mauled me to protect her when she was in pain, which was out of character, and I drove them both to the vet in a panic.
Last thing is I was told she also came back positive for tapeworm likely from the rescue and to treat all my other cats and them at the same time. They gave me drontal and said give it at same time as revolution but the revolution order got delayed from issues w vet approval and now is arriving after I am gone. How big of a concern is this delay?
Idk I’m a panicking cat mom who works remotely I’m never away from them. Any advice appreciated!
