Why is it that for a lot of us? We are the only blind people most members of the public have ever met or will meet in their lifetime? Why are deaf people more common or seem to be?
I’m a special education teacher who has recently needed to do research on ABA, . At first, I found some pretty big claims that ABA was abusive and I was afraid that these therapies were harming our students. but then I started hearing statements from parents of autistic kids, and several were positive.
The main points that I hear from autistic adults is that you shouldn’t force your autistic kids to do things. And that using rewards is similar to the way you treat a dog. but with that same thinking, working for my paycheck every two weeks is the same thing. also a lot of children in ABA are set to engaged in in dangerous behavior. what do those autistic adults suggest we do with that?
Of course there are times where ABA is abusive. Yes, not everyone has had positive experiences with it, but this is also not me trying to speak over autistic adults
