I’ll preface this with the fact that my use case is definitely out of the ordinary, but I still wanted to check. I got my Kompakt a few months ago, and while technically it’s not a “supported” region, I’m using it in Japan (Rakuten). My phone has a few apps sideloaded (LINE, Thunderbird, etc), and I have rooted the device so I can run MicroG (for LINE notifications).

My Kompakt seems to be losing battery quickly when sitting idle, but only if a SIM is inserted/registered. I have EnforceDoze installed so I can check the battery drain during doze, and with a SIM registered the rate is around 2% ~ 4% per hour (Also connected to WiFi). With no SIM registered and on WiFi only the drain rate is around 0.3% ~ 0.6% per hour.

I know that the cellular radio is one of the most power intensive parts of the phone, and I’m not expecting the same level of drain as on WiFi only, but I feel like my standby drain with a SIM is a little high given that it’s doing nothing. I thought that it might be a background app issue, but it seems like its just the radio constantly waking the device for no apparent reason. Looking at some battery historian/similar logs, I see a lot of activity related to IMS; there seems to be a lot of CCIF_AP_DATA/RILJ entries in the log.

Does anyone else have anecdotes about expected battery life? I'm really loving the phone so far, but at this rate the battery will barely last a full day with very light use, which is quite dissapointing.

UPDATE:
Just as an update. I tried disabling mobile data and looking at battery drain (still on WiFi). The drain was about the same so it seems like it’s all just drain caused by regular signaling by the modem and not app pings etc. I came up with a Tasker setup that puts the phone into airplane mode (cellular only) whenever the phone enters doze and is connected to WiFi, and the battery drain has instantly plummeted to under 1% per hour on WiFi.

Maybe the radio on the Kompakt is just inefficient, or maybe there’s a bug in the firmware that’s not letting it idle properly?
