Doing some tests I discovered the images for power off, sleep screen (or what users here call lock screen due to the lock icon) live in Kernel. Four of them: sleep screen with the padlock, logo, powered off, and flat battery. Plain 480×800 bitmaps, no files anywhere. (drivers/misc/mudita/eink/).
Problem is you can’t just rebuild the kernel with your own. Mudita’s published source is missing the eink/ folder that holds them. So the workaround is a small Magisk-loaded kernel module that swaps them in memory at runtime. Reboot restores the originals, so it re-applies each boot.
You can also tell the kernel to paint the power off image any time, and it doesn’t actually power off, it just draws. So that slot works as a repaint channel, letting notifications show up on the sleep screen without waking the phone. (kinda like an Always on display, which this technically it’s not).
In addition to the text notification it turns on the LED (green for whatsapp, blue for signal and red for anything else).
Battery cost for these features is negligible. Nothing runs on a timer, the screen only draws when a notification arrives, which already wakes the phone anyway. Once it’s drawn the phone goes straight back to sleep. The LED draws almost nothing and switches off as soon as you check the phone or you view the notification in aother device (phone, pc).
Please don’t ask for a tutorial, this was just to show that the sleep/locked display can do much more than just show you a lock icon.
Been on the Mudita for 2 weeks now and I kinda like it. I've tried a bunch of minimal phones, but I like this because of the small form factor, the e ink screen and it's ability to side load apps like Whatsapp.
Unfortunately because I cannot use my banking apps and investment apps, I need the have another phone for these tasks, and when I use those phones I get distracted. Having two phones is far from ideal.
If the Mudita Kompact had the ability to make NFC payments and Google play service (and a front camera) this would the only phone I'd own and use.
Untill then, it's not possible to fully commit to the Mudita experience. I might have to get myself a Bigme Hibreak Pro, but I don't like how big it is.
Any word on a Kompact 2?
Reading the Mudita forums it sounds like the software is built on Android 12. Which is no longer or soon to no longer receive patches from Google. I'm concerned about this and it's the only thing preventing me from buying because it otherwise looks fantastic. A

Since I’m allergic to our fast-paced society, I try to keep my digital self to a minimum. It started with de-googling my life and transitioned to mostly European alternatives & deleting social media apps like Instagram. But I still don’t feel fully recovered. I can’t find my inner zen; the whole world still makes me feel anxious and depressed. I hope the Media Kompakt will help me find my way back into the world.
BUT ANYWAY...
I’m switching from an iPhone (13 mini) to the Kompakt and am willing to give up apps that keep me hostage, just like evil WhatsApp... but I do have a few questions; the transition will be a bumpy ride, I know, but what are a few essential things that can help me avoid getting too frustrated? I do use Apple hardware with a mixture of MacOS and Linux, I’m still using my old MacBooks from 2008 and 2013, a beautiful Mac mini 2005 plus a recent Mac Studio (only for work).
So, can OpenBubbles work without having to keep a spare iPhone running all the time?
Is there a solution for Tidal (or Qobuz), a third-party app optimized for e-ink maybe?
And what about apps that rely on iCloud, such as Calendar, Keychain, Mail, and so on?
Of course, no need to answer all my questions, but if anyone can, that would be great! Thanks in advance! Or maybe it doesn’t even have to be a direct answer; just a life changing tip like: go grab a cup of coffee and relax for a bit :-).
Is there any way to make the alarm gradually increase in volume? It seems like a pretty common setting, but I can't figure it out. If not, I put in a big ol' vote to add that to the next update cause it's tough sharing a bed with alarms going off at full volume.
I went and dropped my Kompakt and cracked the screen protector. Mudita sells them of course but the shipping literally triples the price for me. Anyone have recommendations for decent aftermarket screen protectors or am I doomed to spend $30 on a piece of glass
Hi there, just got my Kompakt and really enjoying it so far! I have people sending me pictures, and I'd like to get them onto the computer. there's a button to download the photo in the SMS app, and when I click it the phone says "saved to download folder." but I have no idea how to access that folder!

Hey digital minimalists! I am seriously wanting a Mudita Kompakt but have one hold up. My workplace requires that I have the E3 Safety app by Emergent 3 on my phone. I know that the Mudita Kompakt supports sideloading apps, but know that some apps won't work depending on the apps inner workings with Google services.
Would anyone with a Kompakt be willing to attempt sideloading the E3 Safety app and report back on their findings? This is the one app that is putting the plunge on hold for me.
I know this is a dumb phone subreddit, but as an owner of both the Kompakt and the Oasis, I find the Kompakt to be barely usable, but the Oasis to be just wonderful. That is all.

What are your experiences with making calls with third party wired headsets on the mudita? I usually use a pair of classic apple wired airpods, but anytime I make a call I have to unplug them due to the other person not hearing me clearly. It seems to me that the mudita doesn't register/use the built in mic in the headphones, so the other person just gets muffled audio from the phone in my pocket. What are your experiences with this? Would another headset work better?

I decided that this phone wasn’t for me after a few months. works perfectly, just didn’t fit my constantly taking pics of my kids and juggling family docs on the go lifestyle. I noticed a tiny chip in the glass while factory resetting. I guess my loss is your gain.

I downloaded the APK for android from whatsapp.com, but when I tried to install through mudita center it only gets to 90% and then tells me the "Installation failed. The installation process was interrupted". Tried multiple times with the same result. Anybody know what that's about?
EDIT: I have successfully installed one other app so the mudita center does work, at least some of the time. Not sure why it's a different story with whatsapp.
EDIT 2: RESOLVED. Looks like when I unplug the phone and check, the app is installed, even though mudita center said it couldn't finish the installation.
Hey all, I just recently got a Kompakt. I wanted to upload some photos that I took so I plugged the phone into my mac, but it doesn't show up anywhere. I've tried googling this and looking on mudita's forums but it looks like this might not even be an option for mac users? I'm honestly really surprised that mac users are unable to transfer any files to/from the Kompact, since Mac OS is the 2nd most used operating system out there. Please tell me I'm wrong and there's a way to get this working?
EDIT: I tried following the instructions here https://support.mudita.com/en/support/solutions/articles/77000580051 but it doesn't look like my mac has the same options as what are listed in these instructions. The control center has no "settings" button. I did try clicking on "edit controls" and looking for connected devices, but no such options were there.
EDIT 2: I tried going through the mudita center, which did recognize my phone, but the app crashes/goes blank when I click "manage files", so I can't use that either. Tried it on both Mac and Windows, working on neither.

First off, I know sideloading is not officially sanctioned by Mudita. But, I'm trying to get the Aurora store APK file. I'm having a hard time finding the info I need online for how to actually download the file. I'm at auroraoss.com, trying to get the Release version of the Aurora store, but it seems like there are a bunch of versions/files, so I'm a bit confused which one I need. There seem to be 3 versions (vanilla, huawei, and preload) and within each of those there are a bunch of different files, which look like they're probably just different updated versions of the same thing? So I assume I would take the one with the most recent date? If anyone has had success downloading Aurora from their website, I'd really appreciate hearing which version you used!
