We'll refer to this as KompaktOS as Unofficial LineageOS 23.2 - Android 16 for Kompakt is a mouthful.

This ROM has been customized to work for E-ink devices and for this size/resolution in particular. This means that Settings and all default apps have been customized to be black and white.

It is a full ROM running it's own LineageOS recovery which you'll have to install first before installing the Rom. Our custom Kernel, Vendor and Recovery open up some features and fix some others. Most imprtantly makes updating this ROM seamless with ADB side-load, or even with OTA updates.

Requirements:

* **A computer with adb and fastboot:** see Install ADB

* **An unlocked bootloader:** see Unlocking.

* **A backup** of anything you want to keep: installing erases the phone.

* **The files for your phone and edition:** see Install.

The project has been open sourced, and you can use the patches to make your own builds or try buiding new custom ROMS.

Some of you might not need this today, but you might need it in a few years when apps stop being supported for Android 12. Mudita has made it clear they have no intentions to upgrade the Android version.

[App] Cards - A flashcard app for your Kompakt

I made a flashcard app for eink devices using Mudita Mindful Design. I couldn’t find a good flashcard app for my Supernote Nomad after trying many, so I made one. (Waiting to see how the 2.0 OS goes before getting a Kompakt.) It’s highly customizable, and offers folders, spaced-repetition study mode, plus a practice mode for cramming. It contains everything I’ve always wanted in a flashcard app but never had until now.

It’s completely offline. It has no Internet permission, no accounts and no tracking, and your cards never leave your device unless you export them. It’s also open source, so you can check for yourself. For transparency, I used Claude to help write the code.

People who have screen protectors, is it worth it?

Today I put my Kompakt in my back pocket and sat down. When I took it out, there was a big crack on the top of the screen : (

I've never had this happen to me in my previous smart phones but I assume that the material making the E-paper screen is likely different from OLED screens. Maybe more fragile?

I'm debating if I want to buy a screen protector to avoid further damage. If you have a screen protector on yours, do you recommend it? Do you think it really helped?

[App] InkShelf - An Audiobookshelf Client made for the Mudita Kompakt for your self-hosted Audiobooks.

Hello everyone! I am a relatively new owner of a Mudita Kompakt, a relatively experienced Android developer, and a huge enjoyer of audiobooks. With those things in mind, I decided to write an app for the Kompakt which combines all three. I made an app called InkShelf.

What it is:

This is an Audiobookshelf client made for the Mudita Kompakt. It uses your existing Audiobookshelf instance by allowing you to point to your instance and using your existing credentials.

What this means:

The idea of this app is to have a basic Audiobookshelf app, but made specifically for e-ink displays. It allows you to stream your audiobooks, or download for offline playback (with storage location customizable for storing on SD card if you prefer).

Features:

Connects to your current self-hosted Audiobookshelf instance (currently only supports HTTPS connections)
Allows streaming playback, or downloading for offline playback.
Title/Author/Series sorting (A-Z or Z-A)
Chapter viewing and selection (where functionality exists for your books)
Dithering of cover art so it looks half-decent on an e-ink screen (or you can turn cover art off entirely if you want)

Known Limitations:

I do know that longer (~80hr) audiobooks might not load correctly. This is a RAM related issue which I am currently working to fix.

Additionally, longer audiobooks take a couple seconds to buffer in order to start, but once playing, there should be no issues. This is also an issue I'm looking into!
