No, they didn’t.

I see a version of this post nearly every day, usually in relation to dexamphetamine. The typical form is: “I started taking [stimulant, usually dex] 2-3 months ago. At first I felt transformed, my life glistened with hope and potential, I loved cleaning my apartment and crushing task lists. Now it has stopped working and increasing the dose doesn’t help. What should I do?”

What you should do is:

  1. Read this - https://psychofarm.substack.com/p/why-your-patients-stimulant-stopped

  2. Recognise that the desired clinical effect of stimulants is the ability to sustain attention somewhat more easily and for longer on tasks that are still boring. It is NOT meant to improve your mood, make you excited about previously boring tasks etc. Those things are not generally experienced by “neurotypical” people; rather, they are transient side effects of stimulants, particularly amphetamines, related to increased subjective salience, mood and energy, which naturally go away over 2-3 months.

  3. See your psychiatrist / prescribing doctor who will probably tell you the same thing and suggest you supplement the meds with coaching, structure and self-examination.
