Danish news: Government wants to drastically reduce pig production

Danish news: Government wants to drastically reduce pig production

Today, the Danish government held a press conference about their intended political goals. One of their min goals is the reduction of conventional pig production.

Specifically, there will be a temporary moratorium/ban on expanding conventional pig farms. Furthermore, there shall be a four-party agreement between farmers as well as environmental and animal welfare organisations on the future of pig production. This includes a national ban on spraying pesticides in vulnerable groundwater areas.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen states that in the future, Danish pig production shall focus on the pigs that are consumed here or processed domestically before export.

Søren Søndergaard, chairman of the agricultural interest organisation Landbrug & Fødevarer (Agriculture & Food) criticised the governments plans.

- The government is determined to make it more difficult and more expensive to produce food in Denmark.

He adds that, in general, he “wishes the government would address the consequences of its own policies”.

He describes a pesticide ban as ‘symbolic’ and emphasises that Danish farmers currently have no idea how new nitrogen regulations will affect them next year.

- Danish farmers are operating under a great deal of uncertainty at the moment. Everything is up in the air, so it would be a sign of responsibility, not weakness, if the government were to pause and reconsider, he says.

- That is the best way to achieve a better aquatic environment, improved animal welfare and sound agricultural production, he says.

Over 300 members - announcements and wishes

Hello everyone!

Our community has reached over 300 members. Thank you so much everyone! As a community only is as great as its members, we would be very happy to hear about your wishes for the future, or how we could improve even further. This could be everything from rules, appearance or advice. We are all newcomers to moderation, so any advice is appreciated. As mods, we have worked on several things recently, so we want to share them with you.

Flairs

As you might have seen, we have added flairs for users as well as posts. We hope that this can help users finding the content they search for, whether you are searching for recipes, inspiration or advice. And users can apply flairs for themselves. You can either pick your nationality, vegan status or preferred food (as a Dane, I strongly recommend the “potato muncher”-flair). Many of the flairs can be edited, so you can adapt it to your needs and wishes. Insulting or otherwise offensive flairs will obviously result in consequences.

Wiki

In addition, we have started to make a wiki for this sub. You can access it via a button on the right sidebar. We hope this wiki to become a little database for our Nordic vegan cosmos. In the wiki, you can get an overview over organisations, (web-)shops, blogs or books. But we always strive for improvement, so if you have any idea how to make it better, contact one of our mods. We always are open for your ideas and wishes.

Rules

We have also updated the rules. We try to keep them simple and understandable. We also encourage you to report anyone who breaks the rules in any way. As the community grows, so does our work.

At last, we want to thank everyone contributing to this community again. Everything of this is thanks to you.

Kind regards

The moderators

Buckwheat - the forgotten Queen of Cereals

Hello everyone,

I have a deep passion for traditional food and old varieties thereof. To my big disappointment, we don’t eat much buckwheat in the Nordic country, which is a shame in my opinion.

Buckwheat has a long history, and has also been consumed a lot in the Nordic area throughout the ages. In Denmark, it had a special role on the island of Funen/Fyn, where the porridge version has sticked to the islands history for centuries. When cultivating the plains of Jutland, buckwheat played a major role in the conversion of the heathlands.

Healthwise, buckwheat has many good properties. Despite its name, it is not a traditional grain, so it is free of gluten. In addition, it is rich in protein, minerals and fibres, making it a valuable source of nutrients.

I first encoutered Her Majesty the Queen of Cereals on my travels to Eastern Europe, where it is a staple food in many countries. Eaten as porridge or like rice, she has many faces and shapes. Her slightly nutty flavour being a pleasure for most people.

I like to eat buckwheat as many people would eat rice. My go-to comford food is buckwheat “rice“ with fried or baked vegetables, cooked in oat cream and served with frikadeller/patties. But there are many ways to enjoy her, so find the best way for you.

Good vegan organisations and associations in the Nordic countries

Hello everyone,

After getting some inspiration from other vegan subreddits, I have decided to make a little wiki for us vegans in the high north. However, I do not know all the respective associations and organisations in all the countries. And that's where you come in.

I am looking for any kind of relevant organisation or institution on the field of veganism. No matter if it is the National Vegan/Vegetarian Society, an activist organisation for animal rights or something entirely different (still related to veganism). I guess it would be nice for all of us if we have many resources to draw knowledge and inspiration from. And making it easier for everybody to network.

And if you have any other suggestions for the wiki, please share :). I am an absolutely noob in this, and any advice is appreciated.

Thank you in advance :)

Danish News: Manure from pigs has polluted watercourses all over the country with heavy metals

https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/svinegylle-har-forurenet-vandloeb-i-hele-landet-med-tungmetaller

Almost four out five (79 percent) watercourses are polluted with zinc, and almost half (48 percent) are polluted with copper.

Approximately 70 and 75 percent of the zinc and copper respectively, that is in our aquatic environments, is assumed to come from agricultural fertilisers (including manure). Especially manure from pigs has caused this, senior researcher John Jensen explains. Zink and copper have been increasingly fed to pigs to prevent diarrhoea and increase growth.

Favourite national dish - vegan version

Hello everyone!

I really love to try cooking dishes from around the world. However, I don’t know too many good dishes from my neighbouring Nordic countries.

So, what dishes can you recommend?

My favourite Danish vegan dish is probably “brændende kærlighed”. It consists of mashed potatoes, and you usually add bacon, fried onions, pickled beetroots and some fresh parsley to the dish. Instead of bacon, I like to use mushrooms sprinkled with some smoked salt. Otherwise, smoked tofu is very good too when fried.

Looking forward to your replies!
