3-year-old picked out the OG Curious George for story time, and at least in the first book, the man with the yellow hat (MwYH) is completely a villain, George just doesn’t care. He impulsively decides to take a monkey home with him from Africa. Monkey nearly drowns and is rescued by sailors, no help from MwYH. MwYH leaves monkey home alone, monkey calls fire department and goes to prison. Monkey returns to MwYH who has decided George is not worth the trouble and puts him in the zoo. -.0

I’m going to say this series/franchise lost the script somewhere and MwYH has incredible PR, but maybe that makes sense because he’s clearly privileged enough to be impulsively taking African animals home with him.
