Pelle as a modern Viking

When everyone is heading to the Harga village from the airport, and the men are discussing why the women there are so attractive, they float the theory that it’s because the Vikings absconded with the hottest women from everywhere they raided.

That’s one of the many little details I love about this movie because Pelle clearly wanted Dani to come on the trip when everyone else was ambivalent about her joining (at best). I like to think it’s because he was executing the Viking theory with Dani, and while the men along for the ride understood his strategy in theory, they were oblivious to it in practice.

One thing about Yesteryear that didn’t gel for me

(There was more than one thing, but I’m just gonna nitpick this one because I haven’t seen it discussed yet — apologies if I missed it!)

OK so let’s assume we accept the premise that a tradwife influencer wants to live like she’s actually gone back in time, demolishes the house she remodeled with such care and attention, and then wakes up one day having lost ~15-16 years of her life or whatever, and there are no mirrors, so she can’t see in her own face that she is now 50 instead of 35.

I don’t know about all y’all but as a 45YO woman myself, there are parts of my body I can’t see in mirrors that definitely indicate to me that I’m no longer 30. My hands are a big one! And so are my tits. I haven’t had any “work” done anywhere so I imagine this is a pretty standard experience — and I also stay out of the sun/use sunscreen pretty religiously on any body parts that are gonna be exposed when I go outside, especially backs of hands and wrists. But they are still not the hands of a younger woman, my skin is different now in a noticeable way — even my 12YO boy has pointed this out (thanks, kid).

I remember being a little girl and being absolutely fascinated by my grandmother’s hands because they looked so different from mine. If I woke up one day and didn’t know where I was or what was going on, and thought I was still pregnant from the last time I remembered being pregnant, and didn’t have any mirrors for reference, I’d be checking out my hands/toenails/other body parts that I can see without the aid of a mirror to clock their status.

ETA: Obviously she’s having some kind of psychotic break — I’ve had family members with pretty severe mental illness and psychoses who thought all kinds of weirdness was happening to/around them, so I’m pretty familiar with what that looks like IRL. If she managed to notice she wasn’t pregnant anymore, I’m just really unclear on why she wasn’t checking out the rest of her body to examine more context clues. Mental illness doesn’t mean you can’t see or remember what your hands look like; it’s an insufficient explanation IMHO.
