Cyclists vs bus riders

I'm a lifelong bicyclist and at times rode the city bus to get to and from work.

In case other bicyclists are not aware, even if you are riding in the bus lane or on the sidewalk, when a city bus stops and opens its doors, you should also stop until its doors close (same as for a school bus).

I'm not just addressing students or others new to town -- I have also observed middle-aged, driven, atomized, self-important academic jackasses from UF being inconsiderate to our bus drivers and passengers.

Why fiber instead of 5G?

After I switched from Cox a few years ago, I have been getting plenty of bandwidth for $55/month from T-Mobile 5G Internet. So far there was one outage of a few days where it took a while to determine that it was my box that had gone bad and not something to do with the tower upgrades at the same time.

Recently, there have been several companies painting up roads and planting flags in our yards (far enough in that it could be considered trespassing, and which we now presumably should navigate around when mowing our lawns). Who gave them permission to do that? I sure didn't.

What would be the benefit of laying fiber in separate-house neighborhoods when 5G internet already works so well? It's seems like a lot of expense and disruption for what might be old technology.

I also imagine that after the fiber is laid, there might be a fear campaign to make people wonder whether 5G is cooking their brains.

Android emulator with ARM support for APK apps on Linux

Recently I spent some time looking for an Android emulator for Linux that had ARM support even if running on a non-ARM CPU, so that I could run Pleco and other Chinese-learning apps on the big display attached to my PC.

Genymotion for Linux desktop doesn't have virtual ARM devices, and it looked like it was too much trouble to set up ARM support on Waydroid (plus, I have an NVidia graphics card and primarily use X11).

It turned out the easiest way forward was to just install Google's Android Studio, even though I only use the virtual device manager.

That package itself was not very large. I also learned that after one creates a virtual device, it's possible to launch it without opening Android Studio, either from the terminal or from a shortcut key.

Just posting this in case it might save someone else some time.

I'll stop here because I don't how much interest there might be.

So, did Simon Quigley leave Ubuntu for a year or not?

Also, what was the libel issue he mentioned, involving an IRC channel that probably very few people of Earth ever frequented?

Is he okay?
