Traffic
Reminded today about how AWFUL traffic here is during the school year. Had a reprieve during the summer but now it's back to half an hour drive just to get three miles.
What do yall think the worst areas for traffic are?

So we are considering moving to Gainesville for family but I need advice on the restaurant/bartending scene. My husband is a full time bartender at one of the few high end restaurants where we live now (another SEC college town with similar culture, but lower cost of living).
If you are a bartender in the Gainesville area at a higher end restaurant or know someone who is, can you let me know how it is and approx how much you make? Are the restaurants super busy consistently?
He has been looking around at restaurants in Gainesville and says he thinks Prime and Pearl or Spark at Embers would be good fits for his experience. He has been bartending for 10 years and is very talented at it. he makes the weekly rotating craft cocktail menu and makes completely new specials weekly. Makes homemade bitters and syrups, etc. Basically he would want a place where he has similar creative freedom.
Of course we know how it works at restaurants and as a new hire you don't always get the best shifts and some places even have you serve for a while before you can bartend. And there may not even be openings at the places he likes.
Basically we don't want to make the move and find out he wouldn't make good money. Before tips he makes $8 an hour bartending, $16 when doing inventory, cleaning, etc but all of that goes to taxes. He makes approx $65k a year. He would need to make more to counter the higher cost of living. So trying to gauge if that's even possible.
Thanks so much for your help!!
I adopted a 4 month old kitten from the event they had on 8/8. Waived all adoption fees, gave everyone goodie bags full of items. Thought it was a really nice thing to do to get animals into a home.
This cat has had eye discharge, sneezing, coughing since the day I brought him home. They had me take him home the same day he got fixed which was on 8/11.
Based on his medical records, they were treating him for a cold but did not mention a single thing to me when I arrived to take him home.
They also offered a free vet visit. I ended up going to Newberry animal hospital (they’ve been great)
Now the vet has called saying my cat has 2 different parasites after testing his fecal sample.
Did anyone else adopt a cat from this event and already spending money to get them healthy?
I know the animal shelter can’t guarantee anything but why are they giving out sick cats to people?? And why do they never answer the phone?? Does anyone know if they offer to pay for treatment?
My Mother's 95 birthday is coming up and I want to take her some place with exceptional food, great service and prices that are worth it.
Does Shula's meet this criteria?
Any other recommendations?
Thanx!
EDIT: Thank you everybody for keeping me from making a mistake.
Shula's is out!
Embers it is!!! ❤️
Howdy,
Last week I went paddling the Santa Fe near Rum Island and loved it immensely. The only average part was the hour drive from Gainesville. So I was wondering if there are other destinations worth checking on a paddle board that are as far or closer than Rum Island.
Thanks.
I'm a hobby insect pinner and am considering selling framed bugs. I'd love to have bugs in local shops if there are any that stock local makers.
Any info on how they sell local makers goods is helpful as well, as I've never done this. Are they consignment, or rent space in their shop, etc.
Edit: I'm not going to debate ethics. I do what I can for conservation.
Did anyone witness or hear any updates regarding the incident at the Trader Joe’s parking lot this morning?
I saw firefighters rescuing children locked inside a truck, and it's been on my mind all day. I'm really hoping they are safe and okay. If anyone knows how the situation turned out or saw any local news coverage, I’d appreciate the update.

Is there anywhere in town that I could find the typical 55 gal plastic shipping barrels/drums?
WHY IS IT SO SHORT?! Every day I commute using I75 Northbound and the Archer Road entrance ramp is a death trap. It basically deposits you into the right lane of the highway immediately. During 5 o’clock traffic you are at the mercy of the oftentimes slow moving car(s) in front of you and the countless semi trucks already on the highway that are coasting in the right lane. After many near car wrecks due to traffic and people panic slamming their brakes at the very last minute of merging, I’m done. Going to change my route but has anyone else experienced this?
Is there anyway the entrance merge lane can be extended?? I can only imagine how many car accidents have happened because of this.
EDIT to add clarification: I am speeding up to 60+ on the on-ramp. My concern is sometimes I can’t do this because the car(s) in front of me are going anywhere from 30-45 MPH. This leads to situations where they panic because there is a semi flying by and they proceed to either swerve on the shoulder or come to a complete halt, creating a very dangerous situation for all vehicles in the vicinity.
Muscadine grapes are so good from local farms. Any farms nearby for pick up these days? Thanks.
Anyone know about the adult male that jumped from the UF Health parking garage? I believe on 8/16.. I'm seeing posts about a female but a male also jumped.

I'm part of a private reddit club. Someone just sent me some Alabama-themed gifts. I'm supposed to now send gifts to another person. They said they like snack food. Apart from the obvious Gator swag, is there anything special or unique to Gainesville that I could send along? Maybe alligator jerky?
Seems like it's been closed for a few days now? Any idea why? I'm not seeing any major violations or anything.
My 5-year-old loves performing (doing plays at home, making up and singing her own songs, etc.) and I would love to get her involved in some sort of theater productions or classes to explore that interest. Any recommendations?
I looked at the LyriCo Conservatory which looks promising, but would love to see if anyone has personal experience with that school or other theaters in town! Thanks!
I recently got back into pokemon card collecting, used to do it a ton 10ish years ago in Highschool and man has the world changed. Can't buy anything on the shelves and everything online is either sold out or superr expensive. I remember when Walmart was practically giving away these things. Where are the best places to buy cards now, and what days do stores get stock?
