Totaled E-Scooter Disposal (Queens)
I'm in possession of an escooter that got hit by a car. The board of the scooter (where the battery is) is swollen, which I assume means a damaged lithium-ion battery. I tried looking on google but everything is telling me to put it in a container filled with sand or cat litter and to bring it to special waste removal EXCEPT
- the scooter is still in one piece so I don't have a container that big
- I don't have a car and idk if MTA will let me bring it with me
- DSNY themselves don't mention damaged batteries
What do I do?
UPDATE/EDIT: So hear me out...
Last night, I put the scooter in an enclosed outside trash area because I didn't wanna bring it up to my apartment with the swollen case/battery. I was going to tell my super not to touch it, but my partner told me it wasn't necessary, which I believed bc I've been told from multiple sources that I'm extra, dramatic, and an overthinker.
Turns out the super “took care of it” and the “metal guy” took it this morning 😬.
My plan of action, combining all the valuable advice I got from this post, WAS going to be bringing it to a nearby repair shop so they could take out the battery safely, in which case it would more likely fit into a container with sand/silica/cat litter that I could then bring to special waste disposal.
I hope my experience and research can help others in the future.
