Breathwork for Grief
I’m not usually one to make Reddit posts but wanted to share this in case it helps anyone who may be struggling and is also breathwork curious.
I lost my Father this June and the emotions, stress, pain, loneliness, and anger all caught up to me in August/September. Hit me like a brick wall all at once. We used to talk on the phone on Sundays - so I was finding Sundays to be particularly hard. I didn’t have anyone to turn to who understood - The world felt empty - It was like an extreme homesickness and loneliness - I was buckled over sad.
I happened to listen to a podcast with Travis Barker (who lost his Mom at age 18 and also experienced a very traumatic loss of his friends via a plane crash). Great listen. Linked here in case you’re curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2ltbQ2oLJg
Travis mentioned breathwork in the podcast and how it helped him overcome his trauma. It made me want to try for myself. I found an amazing coach who guided me through a session. I didn’t go into the meeting telling her about my situation or go into the details of how the loss of my father was affecting me, but told her I was struggling and wanted to try something new.
Not to sound dramatic, but Breathwork saved my life. I was in the deepest darkest place - struggling to figure out how to inhabit this world and carry on with my life and breathwork made it possible for me to process my pain and grief and likely the years of scarcity trauma I had been carrying with me. I find it especially empowering because it’s a tool I have access whenever needed. It doesn’t require any special equipment. Just time.
I’m not saying it’s a cure all (still need plenty of other things) but If you find yourself in the middle of your grief and your anxiety is out of control. I truly believe breath work is a relatively low risk thing to try!
Sending out love ! 💕
