Planting Advice Needed
Hi all,
I've been doing as much research as possible regarding a successful pawpaw planting approach but had some questions. I'm right around the 5b-6a border and have a lot of wetlands in my backyard. My thought was to plant a number or different cultivars in the transition zone between the wooded area and the wetlands - this area is sometimes moist but not underwater or anything - you can walk on it. My thought was that this would sort of mimic the native pawpaws growing near riverbanks, but I'm not sure if this is ideal. The other question I have is light (or shade) needs. In my scenario above, there would be large mature trees on the south side of the pawpaws, and then exposure on the northern side. That seems to provide the shade smaller trees need, but I'm seeing some conflicting information. The other option is to just plant them along the perimeter of my yard, where yard meets tree line, and space them out accordingly. Lastly, generally speaking, how old should seedling be before going into the ground vs keeping in a pot? Can they be planted in year one or two?
What do you think? Am I way off base here one way or another? Any suggestions would be welcomed.
