Not sure if SWE was the right choice, need help figuring out my future career path
I am currently enrolled in a software engineering course which starts in less than 2 months, however while choosing i failed to take into account how big the risks of ai actually was. I know software engineering won't completely be replaced but its undeniable that junior dev jobs are disappears, companies are taking less and less each year.
I used some of my gap year to learn python and sql, I found it interesting, hard at times but it wasn't boring and I didn't dislike it and thats why I chose software engineering in the first place, and I still want to go into Software engineering or DevOps. I just don't want to take such a big risk with my future
That aside, I have an A in chemistry and B in math for my hsc, i was wondering if transferring to another course would be possible, which field should i go into? I just want a stable job with a decent salary which relates to my hardwork, I was thinking about getting a bsc in chemistry and then a pgce and try to become a secondary school teacher but people told me its very hard and i could always stay as a supply teacher.
I just want a stable job with a decent salary actually reflects the effort I put in. Is that too much to ask?
Has anyone navigated a similar situation? switching out of CS/SWE because of AI concerns, or gone down the Chemistry + teaching route? What would you do in my position?
