Choosing a matrimonial regime in Mauritius. Divorce rates got me thinking, which one would you pick?

Getting married soon. I took out some loans on my own to buy land and build a house, everything's solely in my name. My partner didn't want to be on the loans jointly (didn't want to be stuck with debt if things ever went south), which I get.

Now I'm trying to figure out which matrimonial regime makes sense given how common divorce is here. As I understand it, we have three options:

  1. Community of goods (default): only what's acquired during the marriage is shared; pre-marriage assets/debts stay personal.
  2. Separation of goods — everything stays individually owned/liable, before and after marriage.
  3. Notarial marriage contract — basically separation of goods, but customizable with specific clauses (e.g. compensation after X years, recognition of non-financial contributions, etc).

Since my property predates the marriage, either #1 or #2 should protect it from an automatic split. The real question is what's fairest going forward, for both people.

Anyone here actually navigated this (or been through a divorce) in Mauritius?

  • Did a notarial contract feel worth it?
  • For "separation of goods", did it hold up in practice, or did courts still award compensation anyway?
  • Notary recommendations for a contract that's fair to both sides, not just one?

Is the cost of living in Mauritius becoming genuinely unaffordable, even for people with decent salaries?

Over the past 24 hours, I spoke to three different people who are all doing relatively well professionally, yet every one of them mentioned financial difficulties.

Some are in management positions and earn what most people would consider good salaries, but they still feel unable to buy land or build a house without taking on a loan for 25 to 30 years. Another person told me they are seriously considering taking a second job just to manage their expenses.

I have also noticed that many people appear financially comfortable because they have a nice car or lifestyle, but in reality, a large part of their salary goes towards leases, loans and other commitments.
It made me wonder: is this now the reality for most working people in Mauritius? Even with a decent salary, are people still living from paycheck to paycheck?

For those comfortable sharing, roughly what income would a single person or married couple need today to live comfortably, save money and eventually afford property in Mauritius?

Does anyone else feel like they’re just existing instead of living?

I’m 22, and lately I’ve been wondering if anyone else feels like this.

I haven’t been in a relationship for years. My life is pretty simple: I work most days, come home, and spend my free time playing video games. I don’t really use social media, I’ve never been to a club, and I genuinely don’t enjoy places with lots of people. Crowds just aren’t my thing.

I know part of the problem is that I’m not putting myself out there. It’s hard to meet people when your routine is basically work and home. I can’t really complain about being single while also avoiding most social situations.

Right now it’s Sunday night. I’m sitting at home, a few drinks in, and just thinking.

Do girls like the quiet life too? Are there actually women out there who’d rather sit somewhere peaceful, maybe watch the stars, drive somewhere with a nice view, or just talk for hours about anything and everything? Deep conversations, random thoughts, life, dreams… the kind of talks where you lose track of time.

Sometimes it feels like everyone wants loud parties, clubs, and constant attention on social media, and I just don’t fit into that world.

Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places. Maybe I’m overthinking it.

Has anyone else been in this position? Did things eventually change?

Observation on food wastage at the restaurant

During the weekend went out for lunch in Curepipe. Price range was above average, where a chicken burger with chips cost around 600rs. Next to my table sat a group of 4 girls, early twenties. Food arrived, after the customary photoshoot for social media, they dig in.

None of them managed to eat more than half of their burgers, i thought maybe they have small appetite and they will packup the food. Waiter came, asked if they will take away the remaining food, response was negative. But to my great surprise, they ordered coffee and cake, so my question is, you just blew 600rs on a burger you couldn't even eat half, where did you find the space to eat cake and drink coffee (note that i didn't stay and don't know if they did manage to finish their deserts).

How dare the island ingrates complain?

I left my family, my friends for reasons i don't want to talk about. it was traumatic. I was captured and sold abroad to the lowest bidder :,(. You think life is good here where groceries cost the same or less as on the island? Here i have to work in a bloody Mcdonald's to earn a measly 100k+ MUR minimum salary, PER MONTH!

Do you have any idea how hell it is here? we can't even afford housing in the city we live in while the 1st class middle income islanders are buying houses left and right in Mauritius, you should see how cheap it is. I can't believe it. Someone should remind them of their place, sorry i mean the chance they have, and how we abroad are suffering while they laugh, party and don't work. Laziness should not be rewarded. Join me my brothers and sisters of equal suffering and let us keep reminding them that it is pointless to complain, they should be taught to look at the bright side of things. Why can't they just pay rent like us, its so much cheaper. 15k rent the crybabies have to pay lol. do they even know how much WE have to pay?

I mean come on lol, if they're so unhappy why don't they just leave? we did it, why can't they do it? anyway they should not come because life is a lot harder for us, we don't have any future where we are and we should spend every minute of our days to remind them that the grass is not greener despite very few of us ever coming back, at least not before retirement. Like for real who do they think they are complaining about a starting salary of 350 Euros. they should be thankful that they at least got that. look at us, we are suffering, we don't even buy land in Mauritius driving prices up for the locals. we suffer here everyday doing jobs we hate, is that so hard to understand? we are just like them but we are thankful at least. no wonder the country is what it is with such ingrates.

I can't believe this other guy dared to compare grocery prices undermining our suffering here. report him for misinformation guys. Guys, this makes no sense, we should stop such rage-baiters

Should i tell a gf about her cheating bf?

I met up with a guy a earlier this week. He told me he was single and kept asking me if we would meet ect he said that we didnt even have to hook up. It would have been a casual relationship situation.

He asked me to meet on monday and we did. He brought me to his apartment where he lives with his roomates and there he initiated sex. When i went back home i realised that i forgot my phone so i logged into my insta through my laptop but he wouldnt reply to me. Then i called one of his friends who i was somehow talking to a few while back so i figured that was most likely his friend and when i called him he seemed kind of upset to know i was over and asked what we did. Then said they found my phone and will give it back.

A bit after the friend asked me if we had sex. I said no thinking it is about respect of their space but actually he asked me if i knew that he was in a relationship. I didnt. I was able to go pick up my phone the next day and saw the gf was trying to follow me on insta. Since now she tried to follow me multiple times and i said i wont contact her. The friend is telling me i shouldnt contact both of them cause he is trying to repair his relationship. I kind of dont want the drama since i have been caught up in similar situations before but not exactly the same, it is the first time i encountered full on cheating even physical. Idk if i should choose my peace. I feel bad that the gf might get manipulated by him cause he will try to minimise what he did . Maybe if i knew he had a gf but she didnt know about him it would have been different where i would have just moved on but she is looking for answers it seems. I know i have nothing to do with it and i dont owe anyone anything but maybe she needs to know for her safety since we did use protection but he asked me if i had another way of contraception before deciding to use it.

Looking to meet new people! :)

Hey everyone! 😊

I'm 25F and originally from Mauritius, but I've been living abroad for the past 5-6 years, so I don't really have much of a social circle here anymore.

I'm back for about 2 months and thought it would be fun to meet some new people and explore the island together!

If anyone's down to grab a coffee, hit the beach, go on random drives, hike, swim, take photos, try new food spots, or just yap, I'd love to meet some new people.

Feel free to DM me! We can definitely have a quick call beforehand too, for safety reasons 😆

Thankss!! :)

Multicultural relationship

Hello

What are your views on multicultural relationships. I'm a catholic man and the girl who loves me is hindu. Do you think relationships with mixed cultures are worth it ? Aren't these tougher than relationships with the same culture ? What about if a child is born also ? Thanks

Offshore Gambling Sites

I wanted to try out online gambling sites, like rainbet and stake, since they have games like plinko, keno, chicken cross, mines, and dice. But I have read somewhere that these are 'offshore gambling sites.' What's the law behind them? I have so many questions.

Can I register an account on such sites and play the games without actually depositing money?

But it's no fun without money.

Is it legal to deposit money into these services and gamble? (These sites work in cryptocurrency)

And let's say I make some winnings. Am i allowed to withdraw my earnings from the site?

Let's assume it's fine to cash out, what's the limit? Do I have to pay tax on the earnings? Am I able to spend it like i please?

Regarding the online sites, are there alternatives in Mauritius that have similar games?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Barber recommendations 🙏

Hello, I'm looking for a good barber in the south east or centre (mahebourg, rose belle, curepipe, rose hill...)

I need someone reliable and consistent. I don't mind paying premium (~rs 500) as long as the service is good. Clean taper/fade and good scissor work, basically all I need, nothing crazier. I also don't want to wait for hours, if they take appointments that would be great.

All the barbers I've been going to have turned into businesses. The owner just sits and delegates all the work to the unskilled trainees, and they charge you the same. I'm seeing there are now more and more foreigners doing this work, which is okay but the quality is not there. For the price, it isn't worth it.

Appreciate all the recommendations!

E-Scooter

Anyone ever bought an E-Scooter or E-bike that doesn’t require the driving licence? I need recommendations on which models to choose and is it worth it?
I am also concerned about the availability of spare part if ever it breaks down.
I’ll only use it to go to the gym and around my locality.

Mauritius does not get any better - Keep Complaining - We heard it all.

The amount of posts I have seen about how everything has increased. All the problems you think you are having.

I have heard all this from a long time ago as well.

couma nous dire, " gouvernement aller, gouvernement vini mem zafer"

The bitter truth : it will not get any better. Sauter piller fer seki ou envi, nanier pa pu changer.

Ask anyone who left to go to UK/Australia / Canada in 1970, or 1990s, 2000s or 2010..

Similar reasons from then, similar now.
