my little cousin wished me happy pride and begged me not to tell her dad

so i am gay m25 and i live at home with my dad, uncle, his two kids and my grandma. my family has all been extremely supportive but i know my uncle is secretly homophobic and has made comments kinda suggesting that he doesn’t agree with me being gay.

when i first came out years ago he didn’t want me telling my cousins (his kids) that i was gay, but i eventually told them anyways. i told my dad and grandma about it and they were upset with him for doing that. he’s also made comments about me choosing to be gay which implies i made the active decision to be gay. i even asked him about it later and he told me he fully thinks it’s a choice. i asked him when he chose to be straight and he told me he was born this way (ironic right).

well today something happened that really warmed my heart but also made me really sad. so my cousin is about a preteen age and she gave me a little birthday card she made for my birthday that happened recently and it basically said “happy birthday” and then a note to turn it around and on the other side it said “happy pride!” and then there was another note under it that said “please don’t tell my dad :(“. she even told me multiple times to not tell her dad that she wished me happy pride. that really broke my heart for multiple reasons. it breaks my heart that my own family member is spouting homophobic nonsense to his children that one of them is too scared to say happy pride to me. it hurts that my uncle is still crazy homophobic after living with him and having him be around my my boyfriend and me for years. it really breaks my heart that whatever he is saying to his children is going to have long term lasting effects on them. i can’t help but think “what if they end up being gay when they’re older?”. they are going to deal with so much internalized homophobia like i did because i was raised in a homophobic household and it took years of healing to fully accept myself. i just kinda wanted to rant and hear what other have to say about this. idk if this is the right place to put this.

TLDR: my little cousin wished me pride and begged my not to tell her dad. her begging me not to tell her dad showed me so much about she’s being raised.
