Booked a return ticket from Melbourne via China southern. Total price $2445. Unfortunately need to change the dates. Changing dates is costing $1340. Thought about cancelling the ticket and re-booking. Was told $740 + some taxes from the airline (they don’t know yet how much)

Why is cancelling and rebooking cheaper compared to just changing the dates. Is there any other way around it which is better option?

Booked From Melbourne-Islamabad via Guangzhou for Nov-Dec. booked it through Flightnetwork Australia. my return date was originally 29th of December and now it’s showing 6th of December. Requested a refund as these dates are not suitable for us. We are told by flight network it could take 15-20 business days. Anyone dealt with this before ? We are just worried that we might not get full refund (which we should ) as we are not at fault for changing the dates. Thanks
