It's basically the main term to refer to your fictional partners nowadays, but does anyone know when/why it has become so widely used?

I've been a selfshipper for over a decade but haven't been participating in the community so I'm not the most up-to-date, and I honestly really dislike the term T_T I presume it's a play on "significant other", but without the "significant" part it just feels empty to me. I mostly call my fictional partners "my boys" or "my (fictional) husbands", but maybe knowing where the term originated would help change my mind on the term.

My commission has just been finished and I'd love to tip my artist and give them a little bit extra, but I can't find the way to do it>_< does VGen have a tipping system? If yes, how do I do it?
