Thanks for the recommendations!

I posted in this subreddit a few months ago about my upcoming visit to PVD, and you all gave me some great suggestions. Got home yesterday. Sadly, I didn’t have time to do everything I wanted, but I had a wonderful trip.

I spent Saturday in Newport, visiting The Breakers and The Marble House, and I was captivated by the architecture and ambiance of both places. Definitely worth the time. And the ferry ride from PVD was lovely.

I visited the RISD Museum, toured the state capitol, wandered around Benefit Street, ate at some places in Federal Hill, and just walked around a lot. I didn’t rent a car, but only wished I had a couple of times. Such a nice, walkable city, and I felt very safe.

I had the afternoon tea at The Marble House, and I thought it was overpriced and not super impressive. But I loved the Portuguese food at Campinos. That was my favorite meal of the trip.

Lots of places I wanted to try but didn’t get around to, but hopefully there can be another trip at some point.

Anyway, thanks again for all the recommendations. It really helped to have the perspective of residents. I love your city!

Young and Damned and Fair by Gareth Russell

Just finished the audiobook of this bio of Catherine Howard. It was so thorough and rather fascinating.

I felt bad for Catherine, as she seemed a bit like a flighty teenager who was way out of her depth. I know we can’t look at events from the 16th century through a 21st-century lens, but it felt like she was groomed, then used by so many men. Seems unfair she had to pay with her life.

I’d be interested to hear others’ opinions of the book. Admittedly, I had not studied her life too deeply prior to this, and I know you guys are far more well-versed in this subject than I am.

Solo Challenge question

So sometimes when you get to the end of a game and your points are lower than the bot’s, it gives you the option to watch an ad and get another turn (or 2). But it doesn’t do it all the time. Does anyone know if there’s a pattern to be discerned?

I’m down to the last one for the week, and I enjoy getting the bonuses, but I was 15 points behind, and it didn’t give me the option of getting another turn, other than spending 30 coins, which I don’t do. So unless it refills my coins to 30 before I go to sleep tonight, I’ll miss out on the bonus. I’m just curious.

Just for fun

If the laws/morals of the past had allowed for kings’ illegitimate children to inherit the throne, which one would have been most likely to be crowned?

Best Portuguese restaurant

I’m very excited to visit Providence next month. I posted a question about in this subreddit a month or so ago and got some wonderful recommendations (which I’ve saved in my phone).

But as I continue planning my trip, I’d like to visit one of the Portuguese restaurants since I’ve never had a chance to try that cuisine.

Aguardente, Madeira, and O Dinis all have good reviews online, but since I’m trusting y’all on everything else, I want to get your recommendation on this.

For what it’s worth, I’m not big on spicy foods and I don’t love clams, but I’m willing to give them another try (last time I tried clams was when I was a Howard Johnson’s waitress in college. I feel sure that everyone else’s clams are better!) Thanks in advance!

Oldest ancestors of Windsors

Considering all the shenanigans/infertility/unsuitable mates and other problems through the centuries, is it possible that the current royal family has a blood connection to the early monarchs— William the Conqueror etc.?

I tried to research it once and ended up down some internet rabbit hole (thanks, ADHD!) so I could never figure it out. The Tudors are pretty confusing (so many Catherines and Margarets and Marys), and I kind of get lost in the weeds with the earlier royal houses.

“People who are surprised when I show up at their house uninvited call me Preston”

I’m rewatching the Thanksgiving episode this evening. I started my rewatch with Mark Sloan’s first appearance and made it all the way to Season 10 before I decided to take a break from the less-fun episodes coming up in S10 and 11.

So I went back and started rewatching from the pilot. And I think this episode is the most likable Burke is throughout his whole time on the show.

The turkey-cooking-as-surgery scenes are so fun! And Bailey giving hell to the visiting doctor is another favorite storyline.

This episode is one of the reasons I fell in love with this show all those years ago.

Mounjaro with Farxiga

I’ve been taking Farxiga for a year or so, and yesterday my doctor added Mounjaro (mostly because I can’t seem to lose weight). My A1C had risen to 6.6 after two years of being in pre-diabetes range.

And after weeks of my morning glucose being in the 130s to 160s, this morning it was 108.

I was thrilled to see the change in my glucose, but can I expect that to be consistent now that I’m on both meds? Today, I’ve noticed that the appetite suppression aspect of Mounjaro has kicked in, so I’m hopeful that I’ll see a difference in both glucose and weight in the coming weeks.

Just wondering what experience others have had.

Why do I love this show so much…

When so many of the characters annoy the hell out of me? I’m up to S9 in my latest rewatch, and I’d forgotten how obnoxious and arrogant some of the doctors are.

I like Jackson and April as a couple eventually, but wow, she was annoying after she returned to Seattle and they resumed sleeping together.

And Bailey is one of my favorites, but she can be a lot to deal with. The episode where Mark and Jackson are operating on one of her longtime patients, the woman who needed the lymph node transfer, she was just insufferable.

On the positive side, I’m loving Cristina even more than I did before. She really does develop a great bedside manner. Her Minnesota arc with Dr. Thomas was fantastic.

Lionel Richie’s “Truly”

I’m listening to the audiobook, which is read by Blair Underwood. He is an amazing reader! To the point that after I finish this one, I’m going to research if Underwood has done other audiobooks. Highly recommend.

Rewatching changes my opinion on some characters

I’m rewatching Grey’s for the first time in nearly a decade — up to Season 7 — and as much as I love the show, I’m seeing some of the characters in a different, far less positive light.

I never liked Reed Adamson and thought she was a good choice if someone had to be killed off, but this time around, I thought her flirtation/competition thing with Alex was insufferable.

Owen — I never really got the intense Owen hatred until this rewatch. Wow, he’s awful! From the way he treats Cristina, Teddy, and Meredith to his petulant behavior on Teddy’s physician-assisted suicide case, I just hate him. I never made it past about Season 14 (maybe 13) on my original watch, so if I make it beyond that point this time, I’m sure I’ll dislike him more.

And ugh to Izzie! She is the absolute worst character of the first few seasons. I think part of it is Heigl’s acting (she’s really bad in the highly emotional scenes — when she cries, I cringe so hard that my soul nearly leaves my body), but a big part of it is how judgmental and bitchy Izzie can be.

And I’m very glad that this is a fictional hospital because I would not feel comfortable being treated in a place where doctors talk about their relationship problems in front of patients.

I don’t live in the Bay Area but I follow this wonderful cat rescuer on Twitter. This senior cat desperately needs a home, if anyone can help. The website is friendsofbearcatrescue.org. Haley, the founder, specializes in helping janky cats, older cats, ones with special needs.

Moderators, I hope this is OK.
