A little experiment today. (Original panel by Luigi Zagaria, new inking and retro coloring by me).

Initially, I thought "How would it look like if I added 90s style inking to a modern Marvel comic".

The first image is original panel from Rogue #1 (2026) by Luigi Zagaria. I went into it quite hyped and excited about how awesome this was going to look only to realize that the end result (second image) looked like someone applied a Borderland-esque filter to the original image and I just wasted two hours of my time.

But... once I separated my ink from the image (third image) I felt like this isn't bad so thought was gonna go further in this experiment and actually use it to make it like it was a page from an old comic. I looked for the palette of colors they used in the pre-digital area, hand-redid the lettering, but the result (fourth image) still didn't look right, too much "Marvel omnibus reprinting old comics in over saturated paeltte for God knows what reason", too lite actual vintage comic.

So finally, in order to get the more real and vintage feel I started adding grain, muted down the colors, yellowed everything up a bit and to finish things off I added a paper crease and a coffee stain.

But I don't know what to think of it. On one had, it does give me a bit of that Jim Lee X-Men era vibe, on the other hand, doesn't really feel like it's superior to the original one in any way. Not exactly helping me win an argument about how X-Men in the 80s and 90s was peak comicbook art.

Still, It was a cool inking practice and a nice little What If fantasy. Probably gonna do more of those, maybe something from the Magik or Generation X-23 (the second one being more stylized, so will probably be easier to 90s-ify), and then move on to actually redrawing whole pages in my style.
