Took me weeks to understand robot mower specs, sharing what I learned

Our lawn guy raised his prices, so we decided to start taking care of the lawn ourselves this month.

I’ve been reading a lot of posts here and going through the comments. The screenshot is from Husqvarna’s mower selector. I put in our yard details and it recommended the 430X. I actually like the idea behind it, since it walks you through the stuff you need to think about. I just wish it also compared models from other brands, like Mova LiDAX, Navimow i210, or Dreame A3.

Honestly, I didn’t understand half of the specs at first. After a few weeks of reading, I feel like I’ve got a better idea now. I’m definitely not an expert, just thought I’d share what I learned in case it helps someone else. Happy to be corrected if I got anything wrong.

  • Area coverage

At first I thought this just meant how big your lawn can be. Now I think of it more like a best case number. If your yard has an odd shape or lots of obstacles, you probably want more capacity than the exact size of your lawn.

  • Navigation

This part took me the longest to get my head around. Boundary wire sounds reliable enough. I just don’t love the idea of putting wire around the whole lawn. RTK looks much easier to set up, though I kept seeing comments about signal issues in some gardens. Vision and LiDAR seem like the most interesting options to me, since they sound more flexible. I still don’t really know how well they cope once the layout gets a bit messy.

  • Cutting width and mowing frequency

I didn’t realize robot mowers are more about frequent light cuts instead of taking off a lot at once. So cutting width doesn’t seem as important as I first thought.

  • Edge cutting

I barely thought about this at first. I assumed a robot mower would clean everything up along the edges, but it seems like most of them still struggle a bit depending on the layout. Some trimming might still be needed, which I didn’t expect before I started looking into it.

Did I miss anything important?
