We’re trying to decide what makes the most sense for a vehicle on St. Croix. We already own a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE350, it’s well maintained and completely paid for, so one option we're considering is simply bringing it down rather than buying another vehicle.

For those who live on St. Croix, I’d love some honest feedback:

- How difficult is it to get a Mercedes repaired or serviced on island? Are there good mechanics/shops familiar with Mercedes, or does it become a headache when something goes wrong?

- How readily available is premium gasoline (91/93 octane)? Is finding premium generally easy?

- And maybe a more subjective question: would driving a Mercedes like this make us stand out on St. Croix, rather than blend in? We’re not particularly interested in drawing attention to ourselves.

- For those who have done something similar, what are the biggest pros and cons you’ve experienced?

Since we already own the Mercedes and it’s paid for, the financial equation is a little different than buying a vehicle specifically for the island.

For those of you who split your time between St. Croix and the mainland, do you have a pre-departure checklist before leaving the island for weeks or months at a time?

I'm not talking about the obvious things like locking the doors or setting the alarm. I'm more interested in the St. Croix-specific tasks that a first-time island homeowner might not think about.

For example:

- Do you need to do anything with your cistern or water system?

- Do you shut off the water or power, or leave certain systems running?

- What do you do with your generator, solar system, batteries, or pool?

- How do you prepare for hurricane season if you'll be away?

- Do you empty the refrigerator or leave the A/C running?

- Are there pest control or humidity issues to address before leaving?

- Any other island-specific tips you've learned the hard way?

I'd love to hear and/or see what your actual checklist looks like. The little things are often the ones you only learn after owning a home on St. Croix for a while, and those are exactly the kinds of insights I'm hoping to learn from.

We're working toward becoming homeowners on St. Croix, and one aspect we're trying to better understand is how people who split their time between the island and the mainland manage their homes while they're away.

For those of you who spend months at a time off-island and don't have family or close friends nearby to help, how do you maintain and keep an eye on your property?

Do you hire a property manager, a home watch service, or a trusted handyman to check on the house regularly?

Who do you rely on if something unexpected happens, such as a power outage, plumbing leak, storm damage, or another maintenance issue?

Are there companies on St. Croix that specialize in home watch services? If so, have you had good experiences with any of them?

What routine tasks do you typically have someone handle while you're away? For example, checking the home after storms, running water, monitoring the generator, coordinating repairs, or anything else that you've found to be important.

We're hoping to spend significant time on St. Croix each year, but we won't be living here full-time, so we'd really appreciate hearing how others have successfully managed this.

Does anyone know if Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care dry cat food is available anywhere on St. Croix? We are planning to bring enough with us, but I'd like to know if there's a local source in case we unexpectedly need more.

Hi all — looking for some insight from people who have purchased homes on island.

Did you receive a property disclosure from the seller during your purchase process? If so, at what stage did you receive it?

- Prior to making an offer

- After going under contract

- During inspections/due diligence

- Or not at all

Also curious whether buyers were generally able to get substantive answers to questions from sellers before submitting an offer (permits, repairs, age/history of systems, solar and cistern info, idea of general home location on previoussurvey, etc.), or whether most information was only provided after contract execution. Or, maybe not shared by the sellers at all.

Trying to better understand what is typical for real estate transactions on island compared to mainland practices.
