Having trouble lighting up character for rendered pictures.

I'm currently lighting up my character for my portfolio but I am having trouble with the lighting. Upon research, I decided to do the three-point light: Fill, Rim, and Key Light. When I tried this, my character's face becomes incredibly dark. She has bangs so it's casting a harsh shadow on her eyes, which is normal. I tried to add a bounce plane, but it still looks really dark. I don't want to risk the character looking plastic or fake. She also has a lot of intricate skin details such as pores, dark under eyes, and pitted scarring on the face. Also, veins running through her forearms that you can't see. Lots of folds in pants and top.

Does anybody have a fool proof way of lighting characters?

My mom was diagnosed with Stage 3(ish) RCC. She had her surgery late February and has started Keytruda March 21st. Her doctor also prescribed her Welireg. The surgeon said her tumor was the size of a soft ball and localized.

This morning, she got her first MRI results back and we’re not sure if we should worry or not.

“There is a new subscapular lesion lateral segment left hepatic lobe measuring 1.5 x 1.1 cm. This is suspicious for a metastatic disease”

“There is soft tissue enhancing and centrally necrotic lesion medial to gallbladder measuring 2.9 x 1.7cm. This is also suspicious for metastatic implant”

Obviously her and I are balling our eyes out because we don’t know what this means. The doctor nor the care team hasn’t reviewed it yet in her mychart. I just want to know what this could possibly mean. Other than that, there is no cancer anywhere else in her body. She goes in for her fourth infusion this Friday, where the doctor should give her a follow up on her test results.
