Non-scholars, how did you afford catered halls?
I'm extremely privellaged to have been offered a $10k scholarship to study at Otago today, but I've come to the realisation that financing a stay in halls is extraordinarily expensive, some costing as high as $25k.
I'm writing to those students who managed to make things work without any scholarship funding. What did you do to make the fees possible to pay?
Many people share the perspective that the ordinary thing to do is take out a loan and get a part time job, but if you live outside of Otago, how are you supposed to secure work months in advance to pay for halls? Do most people really gamble on their ability to find work quickly once they arrive?
