Planning to return NZ

Hello guys,

Im technically Y13 now. I’ve been In my home country for the past ~2 years, Im a resident of NZ (Not a PR yet).

I dropped out of high school early year of Y12 so I managed to complete my L1 with a total of 81 credits and 21 credits of L2 before I left the country.

I’ve been studying for IGCSE for the past year and will be sitting for the exam this upcoming October.

I think I find IGCSE way harder for the common subjects; except for english as I took ESL here compared to standard english for NCEA L1.

If I’m returning to NZ next year (To complete PR requirements) will my Level 1 and IGCSE qualification enough to enter university or will I have to repeat L3 or possibly even L2? I’m not sure if IGCSE is on par with Level 2 but I know for sure A Level is like L3?

I feel like I’m wasting a ton time if I have to repeat highschool there.

Any guidance is appreciated, thanks.

L1 English internal

I just got my English l1 internal result back and got a merit. I was hoping to get it moderated because I saw other merits and thought I did better than them but when I got it back the moderator said it would have been a Achieved to merit level. This is mainly because it wasn't "emotional and persuasive" enough. (Side note: I did a persuasive piece)

I admit I didn't write very well in terms of how sophisticated and how emotional it had to be but I thought I did quite well in terms of accuracy. This internal was focused on accuracy so I thought it was going to be marked off of that.

What do you guys think about these results? And how do I improve because at this rate I'm thinking about not doing English next year and doing something like classics instead.

Uni application

Hi everyone! I'm currently in Year 12, and I honestly have no idea how the university application process works. Would anyone be willing to share their experience? When should I start applying, what are the admission requirements, and are there any entrance exams I need to take? I'd really appreciate any advice or tips.

Advice please

I’m in Year 12 (NCEA Level 2) at a relatively small low decile secondary school and I’ve been stuck on this decision for a while now.

Next year I have a good chance of becoming Head Student / Deputy Head Student. It would be good experience, leadership, public speaking, organising events, all that stuff , and it would probably help for uni scholarships or general applications later on. But at the same time, it’s a pretty small school, so I keep wondering how much weight that actually carries compared to bigger schools. Like it It dosen't even have any clubs or societys. Not sure if I’m overthinking it or not.

But on the other hand… I don't really feel like I learn that well in class. I usually can't fully understand things during lessons and end up going home and teaching myself everything anyway using YouTube, AI, practice questions, etc. I feel like I understand things way better when I can learn at my own pace, which is basically how I've been learning for the last couple of years.I still manage to keep up because I reteach myself everything once I get home. It kind of made me think that if I'm already teaching myself most of the content anyway, imagine how much more I could get through if I was doing that full time instead of after school every day. That's what's made me seriously consider homeschooling for Year 13.

Next year, instead of just getting Excellence endorsements. I want to dedicate a lot of time to preparing for NZQA Scholarship exams and see how far I can push myself. I honestly think that if I put absolutely everything into it, I'd have a much better chance of earning Scholarship and maybe even Outstanding Scholarship. I know Premier Scholar is incredibly difficult, but I just want to see what I'm capable of if I give it everything. I also feel like a decent chunk of the school day isn’t actually used for learning, form time, assemblies, moving between classes, waiting for everyone to settle, etc. Even in class, teachers have to teach at the pace of everyone else. I get that school has structure for a reason, it’s just that I don’t think I use it that effectively personally.

The downside is I’d be giving up my final year at school, the leadership opportunities, and the social side of Year 13. And there’s also the risk I regret it if homeschooling doesn’t turn out how I expect.Another thing I keep thinking about is university scholarships (like the University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship). They look at things like:

  • leadership roles
  • leadership or development programmes
  • community awards
  • competition achievements

If I stayed at school, I’d most likely tick the leadership role and leadership programme box as I’m attending a programme and will continue to do so next year . However, because my school is relatively small and doesn't have the same opportunities as many larger schools, I probably wouldn't have many chances to compete in major national academic competitions.  Also, the uni application doesn't even ask for letters for recommendations anymore, just endorsements.

So I keep coming back to this thought… if I stay and still don’t end up getting scholarships anyway, was it worth giving up the chance to fully focus academically? On the other hand, if I homeschooled and did really well in NZQA Scholarship (like multiple Scholarships or even Outstanding), would that be seen as more valuable than leadership experience anyway? And long term , like 5–10 years from now ,do employers or postgrad programmes care more about leadership/extracurriculars, or strong academic achievement?

Yeah, I’m pretty torn.

Either:

  • stay at school, take the leadership role, have a normal Year 13, keep everything balanced
  • or homeschool and study through Te Kura, lose the leadership/social side, but fully maximise academic time and focus on Scholarship exams

Would genuinely appreciate any advice.

Hello!

I recently completed my Level 3 Physics Praxtical Investigation. The only issue is, I might get not achieved because of two blunders I did in the examination. 1. I forgot to divide the delta by 100 for the error bars. 2. I switched around the variables. My school doesn’t offer a reassessment opportunity as well. Is this internal necessary to pass the course?

Need advice: Leaked NCEA internal assessment being investigated

I’m a Year 12 student. A leaked copy of an NCEA internal assessment was passed around before the test. I received it from another student and forwarded it to one other student. The school discovered the leak before the assessment and changed the version we actually sat. They’re now investigating how the leak spread. The person I sent it to is apparently getting questioned tomorrow, and they told me they’re going to tell the truth that I sent it to them, so I’m likely to get called up next. Should I deny or tell the truth and snitch on the original guy? What kinds of consequences are typical in situations like this?

Feeling so lost rn

As a y11 student with aspiring goals this year, (English Scholarship, NZIBO, three sciences), I never realized that the workload was so heavy. I am an avid reader but I don't read nearly enough classics or poems for the scholarship exam, and my English internal grades have me rethinking my entire skills. I know externals are far away, but I feel as if I am already behind. Does anyone have any advice or tips to help get through this weird slump, or is in the same boat as me? I know y11 is kind of a trial year for y12 and y13, but if it is already feeling so heavy..

Schoalrships for UoA and otago

Hi, I’m a year 13 student from Wellington looking at either UoA for biomed or Otago for health sci next year. I don’t qualify for allowance and my parents aren’t helping with halls so I’m going to need a scholarship to afford to live in either city. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to put in scholarship apps and how to structure them, and if anyone’s gotten a scholarship recently what you put in them to be awarded one?

In terms of accedemics I got 94 e credits last year in yr12 studying lvl 2 physics chem English and food tech and lvl 3 electronics and calculus (taking the classes a year ahea) I got e enforced in physics English and technology and m enforced in chemistry (due to being concussed during exams) I also got top in class for English and top in subject for food tech. this year I’m studying lvl 3 physics, chem, food tech, and electronics again (different standards bc I enjoyed it) as well as first year uni physics and maths at vid and up respectively, and scholarship English, tech, calculus, physics, and chem. I’m currently sitting on 40e credits at end of term 2 so I’m almost certainly going to get e enforced before exams.

in terms of extra curricular I play underwater hockey on so girls A team for my school, and was on the regional u18s squad for underwater hockey, and got most improved on team in yr 11. I have done competitive physics tournaments since yr10, placed third at local tour Manet (yr10), 2nd at trans Tasman tournament in brisbane(yr11) captain of school A team (yr11-13) placed 5th at national tournament this year, was first reserve for the national team going to world champs last year. I completed outward bound on scholarship. I got invited to a few programs including food innovation youth summit by Massy uni, and powering potential residential program by royal society.

in terms of leadership I’m a prefect, peer supporter, coached jr physics teams in local and trans Tasman tournaments, been a juror for local and trans Tasman physics tournaments for yr11s and under, netball referee, underwater hockey referee, youth leader at my church.

pin terms of community/volunteering I was a school librarian for 8 years, helped organise a food drive for the city missio, am currently organising a fundraiser for guide dog training, presented to a representative of the royal society on local wastewater treatment issues. Organised vol entering group to weed invasive plants out of local reserve. Also done various beach cleanups etc

In terms of potentially applicable minorities:female, lgbt

if anyone could give me advice or insight into what I should/shouldn’t put in application or what the application process/ selection criteria are for either uni that would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Attendance and Internal

I have a question about the Ministry of Education attendance codes and how they should be applied, Im not sure if this is the right place to post this. However I have been selected to attend a university-run Model UN event in another city after receiving a scholarship. The event is educational as its for debating, and my parents informed the school in advance. My school also has a Model UN extension group and advertises the event, but the event itself is organised and supervised by the university rather than the school. My school however has coded my absence asE (explained but not justified), stating that because the event is not organised, supervised, or risk-assessed by the school, they cannot approve the absence.

I have attended this same Model UN event before, and on that occasion my absence was recorded as justified. I am therefore unsure why it has been coded differently this time.

Under the Ministry of Education attendance guidelines, would this type of absence be more appropriately coded as J (justified) or E (explained but not justified)? Is it up to individual schools to decide, or is there Ministry guidance on how educational opportunities such as university scholarship programmes or Model UN events should be classified when they are not organised by the school?

Sorry, have a good night!

Can I retake L3 Bio in Y13?

I'm currently in Y12 taking L3 Eng, Bio, and Calculus. Looking back on this year in L3 Bio, it hasn't been my greatest and I'm finding myself struggling quite a bit, only getting merits on my topic tests and internals. And an additional worst case scenario: I happen to have the worst bio teacher for L3. It really stings because I've enjoyed Bio so much and even got a prizegiving award for L2 Bio, which I owe all respect to my L2 Bio teacher who had helped me through it all. But it's been really hard this year, especially with the low amount of support that my current teacher has given us - it just happened to be that out of the 4 L3 teachers at our school, I just happened to have her this year, for the most important level as well.

I'm hoping to study dentistry (or optometry as a back up) hopefully in Australia, but my performance in L3 Bio hasn't been the greatest lately, and I'm not expecting any good results for our mocks next term. Calculus and English I can try get through well, but Bio not so much currently. Our subject choices are beginning soon, and I've looked at my current choices, and still have one remaining spot for a subject of choice. Since I will have completed L3 English and Calc by the end of this year, I was wondeirng if it's possible to retake L3 Bio in order to try and reach greater results? I'm yet to discuss things with some teachers at school, but I'm really desperate. This year has been really tough: doing triple science, calc, eng, and japanese. I hadn't done physics further than year 9 accelerate (so for 2-3 years) so picking up on L2 Physics was already a hard juggle. I don't plan to take japanese next year, but will instead switch to music and take it as a 'free' period due to previous experience.

Please, I need some advice. Is it possible to retake L3 Bio next year in Y13?

*also worth noting that the atar requirement for dentistry (let alone Med) is quite high in Aus so im just trying my best to get all the excellences i can from subjects that are much more heavily weighed for conversion 😓🙏*

Picking up Te Kura standards while at school

Hi guys so this post is pretty much about the title - I’m wondering if I can pick up a standard while actively enrolled in school. Basically next term I’m going to have a flood of internals happening and realistically im definitely going to burn out and ruin the quality of my work. I’m thinking of dropping a standard for economics because it’s less credits than the other internals I have. but I don’t want to rely on my externals to pass the subject then so I was wondering if I could sit it through te kura before all those internals start like early next term or term 4. The reasons for doing this now as opposed to at the end of the year is so it can go on my record before January when Unis check results. If this is even possible to come out before then. I know likely rhe answer is go talk to the person in charge of NCEA. But I just wanted to check if it’s allowed or I’m eligble since I know you have to have certain reasons to do it alongside school/ during the school year.

just wanting some guidance on this from anyone who can help.

I need help for Level 2 stats, trigonometry, Cosine and Sine rules.

I keep getting confused on when to use Cosine length or angle, or to use Sine rule for length and angle. Any and all help is needed for me to memorize this, I just want to get an achieved. Is there any way I can memorize this somehow? I have my test second period money and I won't be able to study first period because I have a bio internal to do.
