If you've done Te Kura, how was your experience with applying and studying for the courses?

I've only heard of Te Kura because of Reddit so I thought to ask here. One of my friends is thinking about taking Te Kura for Level 3 English next year as a Year 12 (because she already takes a few other accelerate subjects and the school doesn't allow for accelerated English because of content ratings(?)) and has some questions.

  • What was your experience getting permission from the school (if you had to)?
  • What subjects/courses did you take and how was the teaching for them?
  • How do you sit internals and externals?
  • Would there be a barrier of entry for taking Level 3 English as a Year 12 student from Te Kura?

Thank you so much!

NCEA Level 2 Calculus and I’m Basically Teaching Myself

I’m a Year 12 student doing NCEA Level 2 Calculus and I genuinely feel like my class is becoming a risk to my achievement. I take academics very seriously. I’m in Extension for all my subjects (excluding calc), I got NCEA Scholarships in Year 11 last year, so I’m not someone who avoids hard work or expects to be spoon-fed. The issue is that my current calc teacher barely seems to understand how NCEA works (new to country) and the teaching has been incredibly unclear all year. Most of the class feels like we are teaching ourselves from YouTube or external resources just to keep up. We’ve been given almost no practice internals, explanations are confusing, and I constantly leave class feeling more lost than when I entered. The frustrating part is that Calculus is literally the only non extension academic subject I take, yet it’s somehow the one causing me the most stress because of the teaching. I’ve tried being respectful and independent, but there’s only so much self-teaching you can realistically do while juggling everything else. I want to ask to move into another calc class, which is in the same exact period as mine, therefore it will not affect any of my other classes. That class also has a teacher known for being excellent, but he’s also extremely strict and I’m worried he’ll take it as me disrespecting a qualified teacher rather than a genuine concern about my learning. Has anyone been in a similar situation and how did you approach it without sounding rude or entitled? I actually cannot continue in this class.

Entering into NCEA from overseas?

I’m moving from the UK to NZ around 2/3 through Year 12 and will probably join NCEA Level 2. I’m doing GCSEs/IGCSEs with predicted grades around Maths A-A*, English Language A, French A*, Geography A-A* etc.

Would I still need to do the literacy/numeracy CAAs after arriving? Has anyone transferred from GCSEs into NCEA Level 2 before? Lastly, would my GCSES be transferred into NCEA credits and will Uni’s look at my GCSE’s as evidence to accept me if I fail level 2 if I don’t have enough credits and also will I be able to get enough credits to pass level 2 if joining in min August. Thanks!

Hey guys, I’m currently doing my Level 2 Chem titration assessment and was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading over my discussion/report. Any feedback would be really appreciated 🙏

Also, if you have any general tips for getting Excellence in titrations, that would be super helpful too. Thanks! :)

Graduated last Friday 🎉

Got my B.S. in Game Design last Friday. I decided to get my hair styled in Afro puffs for the occasion. I don’t think I’ll be going to a stylist again soon though. Hair was so tight even when I asked for it looser and she used so many damn rubber bands 💀.
Reminded me why I do my own hair but my stylist was sweet and I enjoyed the spa day. 🥰

Level 3 Written text

So I have a practice test for this in a week or two and I have made an essay plan for ideas/insight questions. Im worried my essay will sound rehearsed as the essays ive done so far seem really similar between questions. Will the marker see through this or is bending the plan to fit these questions enough?

Any help or advice for Level 2 English Portfolio

Currently I am working through my portfolio and have 2.5 drafts written (2 pieces will end up being published and edited). I am aiming for excellence and know I have the skills to do so. However, I am primarily concerned about the lack of available feedback from my teacher. So far I have done one and a half creative pieces and a formal one (which is one of my six opinion pieces for the other internal we are doing), which was graded excellence. My class is also experiencing similar issues with a lack of relevant feedback so we are all kinda on our own for this one. If anyone has any advice or excellence pieces to share, that would be much appreciated! This internal is six credits (I think...), so I really want to do well. Thank you!

Can I go back to take a subject or an external after I graduate high school?

Hello everybody, im still in hs but I really want to pass this maths external that I failed to get to my dream uni. Thing is, im a Lvl 2 and I was informed that I can take the exam that I failed back in lvl 1. But the thing is, I dont want to do that this year, im a level 2 and its such a step up from lvl 1, considering that the exam (the one thag i failed - lvl 1) in trying to pass is difficult as well.

So im thinking of taking it once im out of hs. Is that possible?

Google says yes, but there are some complications and i want this specific sitaution applied.

Thank you

91106 Lvl 2 English

I chose a book called "The Dangerous Years" randomly, and this was prob one of the worst decisions I could have made. I don't find the book interesting or enjoyable, and it's really hard to read due to the old writing style and historical content. I'm only 30 pages out of 350. And I have to write this report by next week. Should I ask my teacher if I can switch (It's prob too late lol but no harm in trying), or should I just accept my choice?

Also, any recommendations for other books are welcome

Edit: I forgot to mention this is the 2nd book in a trilogy, so a part of me is not understanding the book is prob because I never read the first one

Details of NCEA replacement confirmed

Key details:

From 2028 NCEA will be replaced with a new National Qualification.

2028 – Foundational Award at Year 11

2029 – NZCE at Year 12

2030 – NZACE at Year 13

These qualification changes are being developed alongside the new knowledge-rich senior secondary curriculum so that what students learn and how they are assessed are properly aligned.

Students in Years 12 and 13 will study at least five subjects each year, with a pass in a minimum of three subjects required to achieve each qualification.

NZCE and NZACE will require a student to have foundational literacy and numeracy skills gained through the Foundational Award, which is benchmarked at Year 11, and typically sat in Year 11, although it can be sat at any time.

The Foundational Award can also be awarded if a student passes English or Mathematics in year 12 or 13 instead of the year 11 assessment.

Transitional arrangements will be in place for two years, so that students can use the current literacy and numeracy corequisite to be awarded the Foundational Award. It will be clearly stated on a student’s record of achievement if they used the corequisite to gain the award.

Records of Achievement will clearly show how many subjects a student has passed, eg. NZCE 4, NZCE 5, NZCE 6 to encourage students to strive to achieve their personal best.

A clear six-point grading scale (A+, A, B, C, D and E) will apply across every subject, making results easier to understand and giving parents, employers, and tertiary providers a much clearer understanding of student achievement

Students who achieve strong results across all five subjects will also be eligible for two endorsement awards recognising outstanding academic performance and encouraging students to aim high and achieve excellence across more subjects.

Every subject will include internal assessments and an external examination, with the weighting of the examination varying depending on the curriculum area and the nature of the subject.

From 2028, Science | Pūtaiao will become a compulsory subject in Year 11 alongside English | Te Reo Rangatira and Mathematics | Pāngarau.

This qualification is designed to reward hard work, encourage young people to strive to do their very best, and properly recognise their achievements.

Students currently in Year 9 will be the first cohort to progress through the new qualifications, supported by a clearer curriculum. The new qualifications are, rigorous, credible, internationally comparable, and set students up for success.
