I know it should be fully redone but I just do not have the money to do so, is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Cleaned these banisters with some dawn in a bucket and a red scrubber, was all this oil and grease? I think there might have been some shellac applied a long time ago as a band aid for them. I had tested some dawn on the original wooden handrails to the right of the pictures and they showed no difference in color or any change at all.
