A friend of mine was moving to a new place and she had a ton of irises that were planted about three or four years ago. She said that she couldn’t take the to her new location but I could have all that I wanted. I know right now isn’t the best time to dig them up and replant. I know you should cut the fans down and separate the rhizomes, but I’m uncertain if I should still do that because it’s not the season to replant. I have two giant totes full of them. I know I might experience some loss. I really want to give them the best chance of survival. Should I cut the fans down to 4-5 inches and separate? Or should I just replant them without trying to shock them too much? Please advise me on what to do. I’ve only ever planted ones purchased from a store. And there’s so much online that I’m getting confused about if I should or should not.
