UPDATE: Supervisor Alejo introduced the motion to the MoCo Board of Supervisors:
- adopt a formal position against the proposed ICE detention center in Gilroy;
- transmit formal letters of opposition to federal and state legislative delegation and the federal government
- join any litigation initiated by the County of Santa Clara;
- work with the CA Dept. of Justice to challenge the legality and construction of the facility;
- direct HCD and the county council office to review county zone and land use laws to determine what protections can be instituted to prohibit any future immigration detention centers from being located within the county.
All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously.
Additionally, Supervisor Askew added for discussion actions the board can take but has chosen not to take: giving direction to Human Resources regarding the county's conflict of interest policy for the workforce, specifically in public safety moonlighting for employment with DHS, and the SCAAP contract that allows MoCo to share data about incarcerated individuals in jail with federal agencies.
