Pride flag stolen , do you recognize him? Seaside Ca on July 2nd 2026

On July 2nd at 1:30 a.m, this guy stole our rainbow pride flag. This is vandalizing and a hate crime. He has a distinct cobweb tattoo and possibly a confederate flag tattoo. Also very distinct nasty fat rolls, big guy who has nothing better to do than drive around in the middle of the night and steal a rainbow flag.

The Brussels sprouts at Lucy's on Lighthouse in PG

Hot damn these things are delicious! They're called "Dick Verde" on the menu. For anyone who's a fan of brussels sprouts these are some of the best ever. Crispy outside, glazed with balsamic. Yum! Even people who don't like them might be converted.

Hot dogs are the main attraction there, but don't sleep on these tasty mofos. In fact, I usually only visit whenever I get a craving for Brussels sprouts. That's how good they are!

Love the ocean and electronics? Join our Ocean Tech team! (Pacific Grove, CA)

Hi!  I work at Desert Star Systems.

Our small, innovative ocean tech company is based in Pacific Grove, CA (Monterey)—just a short walk from the popular Lovers Point SCUBA dive site. We manufacture a wide range of ocean instruments used by divers, researchers, and conservationists around the world.

Some of the cool tech we build includes:

DiveTracker: A popular homing system for SCUBA divers.

SeaTag: Satellite reporting tags used by fish and shark researchers.

SonarPoint: Underwater acoustic recorders that localize sound to track whales.

"Ropeless" Fishing Gear: Pop-up buoys for lobster and crab fishers that prevent whale entanglement and stop poaching.

We are currently looking for a Production Manager (or an Electronics Technician who wants to grow into this role!). This job provides a unique opportunity to combine highly technical work with your passion for the ocean. The day-to-day involves the on-time production, calibration, and testing of small batches of equipment, as well as supervising and mentoring a small team of assemblers.

If you want to build tech that makes a difference, we'd love to hear from you.

📍 How to apply: Check out the full job announcement on Indeed here. Learn more about what we do at: www.desertstar.com

(I've attached a few pictures of our products in manufacturing, testing, and out in the field!)

Blasphemy!

I don't hate this guy, I'm just sad that he can't enjoy one of the most beautiful things in life: Bubba Gump's.

We're better off without him.

Proofreading itinerary for weekend Trip

Howdy! I'm planning on doing a car camp trip on the weekend with 5 other friends later this month and I wanted to run my plan for the weekend by folks who know the area better than I do- to see if any of my ideas aren't gonna work of if there's a better option I didn't find.

We're planning on one car heading out from the Bay Area ~9:00am on a Friday to get to Monterey circa noon and claim a spot at the Veteran's Memorial Park campground. Those of us in the first car will set up camp and do any last minute shopping, then I saw that they have live music at the Asilomar Conference grounds that looks to be fun while we wait for the rest of us who had to leave in the afternoon to arrive. We'll head back to camp and make dinner.

Saturday afternoon, we'll be up real early to guarantee we can get parking at Point Lobos. We'll hike around, enjoy the beauty, and if it's not to crowded, go for a swim at Gibson beach. We'll leave Point Lobos sometime between 1-3 to eat out for lunch around carmel, and try to find a spot on Carmel Beach where we can use a camping stove to cook dinner and enjoy the afternoon together on the water. (If we can't find a spot to cook, we'll eat back at the campsite. How hard will it be for us to find those camp stove spots at Carmel Beach?) If we're up to it, then we'll get drinks somewhere pleasant in Carmel- anyone have recommendations on good nightlife? We love live music.

Sunday we're going to get up a bit more leisurely, and head over to elkhorn slough to go kayaking through Monterey Bay Kayaks around the reserve, then grab a late-ish lunch at Woodward's before the people who have to work on monday head back. Sunday night the rest of us will go to Pearl Hour and enjoy some jazz music.

Monday morning, we'll cook breakfast and walk along the water at Pacific Grove. Depending on time, if y'all have any suggestions for what to do Monday morning I'd love to hear them.

Thank you so much for any advice you're willing to offer!

Any local car enthusiasts down to let me practice some cinematic videography on your ride?

Hey everyone,

I'm a local creator based in the area working on expanding my videography style. I'm looking to film a few clean, individual rides around Santa Cruz & Monterey County for a free portfolio project.
If you're down to get some cinematic footage of your car, drop a comment or slide into my DMs with a photo of your ride! You can also reach me on IG @SHANE.93.

Itinerary for upcoming trip

Hello-

We are flying into Monterey, Aug 1, and staying in the area until Aug 8.

If anyone cares to see what I have on the agenda so far and offer feedback, I'd much appreciate it. 2 adults and a 12 yr old on this trip. We'll have a rental car.

Sat - Fly into Monterey, travel to Santa Cruz for the night. Visit the Boardwalk. I think we'll have time to stop at Elkhorn Slough on the way.

Sun - Henry Cowell Redwoods, travel back to Monterey and check into the hotel.

Mon - Aquarium, Fishermans Wharf, eat @ Bubba Gumps

Tues - leave in the AM for a 4 hr whale watching tour from Moss Landing, eat at Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing (we've decided to leave from Moss instead of using a tour from Monterey)

Weds - 17 mile drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea for the afternoon

Thurs - Travel Hwy 1 to Pfeiffer State Park and/or Point Lobos

Fri - Rent bicycles to ride the recreation trail OR tide pooling at Asilomar Beach.

TIA!

Also, adding I am aware we're going to be there the week before "car week". We had already taken time off work and reserved hotels/flights before I learned this. We're going to make the best of it.

Good Pancakes?

A few years ago my wife and I went to a restaurant that had some of the best pancakes I've ever eaten. They were perfectly fluffy and large. I've totally forgotten the name of the place; I don't even remember exactly what town it was in. I can tell you it wasn't in a super touristy area like cannery row. My wife seems to think it was in a strip mall.

Just hoping someone here might help because we're going there next weekend and I'd love to eat those pancakes again.

Edit: we've narrowed it down to old Monterey cafe and breakfast club. Guess we'll just have to go to both! Thanks everyone.

Hail Mary- forgot charger in Pebble beach/Monterey/Salinas/Carmel, CA area

So bummed… here for 10 days, brought our bikes (crosscore and moro) and forgot out chargers! Anyone have one nearby we could borrow or have or something? Or any ideas on how to acquire one quickly?

Matthew Mogensen Expected to Return to Marina as City Manager

The speculation across the Peninsula is over:

On July 2, 2026, the City of Marina announced that its City Council will consider an employment agreement with current Pacific Grove City Manager Matthew Mogensen at its July 7 meeting. If approved, Mogensen would begin serving as Marina’s City Manager in late August.

For those who haven’t followed his career trajectory, the move makes a lot of functional sense:

The Marina Roots: Before becoming Pacific Grove’s City Manager in May 2024, Mogensen spent six years as Marina’s Assistant City Manager under longtime City Manager Layne Long. During that time, he helped oversee major operational and regional planning initiatives.
The Proximity Factor: Mogensen is a Marina resident, making the opportunity both professionally and personally significant.

His return comes during one of Marina’s biggest leadership transitions in decades:

- City Manager Layne Long is retiring on July 17 after 13 years at the helm.
- Mayor Bruce Delgado announced he will not seek reelection this November after more than 20 years on the City Council.

During his two years in Pacific Grove, Mogensen stabilized an administrative environment that had seen significant executive turnover. His tenure included onboarding Police Chief Casey Day in early 2025 and navigating ongoing regional housing mandates.

If Marina approves the appointment next week, Pacific Grove will once again launch an executive search for a new city manager, while Marina brings back a familiar face to step into its chief executive role.

The Paper Trail: Why the City Manager’s Swift Departure Demands Scrutiny

For everyone tracking the sudden departure of City Manager Matthew Mogensen to return to Marina, the administrative record surrounding Pacific Grove’s storefront cannabis licensing lottery reveals a concerning sequence of procurement decisions and contract expansions that occurred before his departure.

The No-Bid Procurement: On December 18, 2024, Mogensen brought forward a professional services agreement with HdL Companies for cannabis permitting services on a no-bid basis, with an initial cap of $24,000. According to the City’s public records, the contract was approved without a competitive review of alternative municipal consultants.

The Fee Structure Shift: On December 17, 2025, as the number of cannabis applications increased, the City approved an amendment restructuring HdL’s compensation to a flat fee of $3,500 per application reviewed, up to a $50,000 cap. This changed the compensation model from a fixed-fee arrangement to one that compensated HdL based on the number of applications processed. The agreement itself did not include provisions requiring review for affiliated or coordinated ownership structures.

The Result: Eight applications publicly identified as being affiliated with the same multi-state operator, Off The Charts, ultimately advanced to the June 15 randomized lottery. As a result, one ownership network controlled eight of the ten lottery entries—an 80% statistical chance of winning the City’s single retail cannabis license. Competing applicants have argued that this outcome exposed weaknesses in the City’s administrative framework and increased the risk of costly litigation.

When a city manager leaves a municipality shortly after procurement decisions that later become the subject of significant public controversy and potential litigation, it is reasonable for the public to ask questions about how those decisions were made and whether the City’s processes functioned as intended.

A formal complaint has been submitted to the Monterey County Civil Grand Jury (pg5) requesting review of the procurement process and related records. The complaint asks the Grand Jury to examine the procurement decisions, communications, and financial records associated with the cannabis licensing process. Whether the Grand Jury elects to investigate is entirely within its discretion. The community deserves transparency regarding what was approved, how those decisions were made, and why the City’s process did not prevent multiple affiliated applications from advancing to the lottery.
