These are scans of 35mm slides I got from an estate sale of deceased sailor

I think the last two are of the Monterey Bay houseboats, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Most of the images in the collection were taken in the 1970's - 1980's.

Fishing questions

What piers in the area can you fish and do they require a license? Additionally, what are the main species you can expect to catch and what do you use to catch them? I was just planning on throwing out some cut bait and seeing what shakes up but suggestions are welcome!

Vacation at Carmel by the Sea and wanting to open water swim

I’m traveling to Carmel by the sea and have access to Monterey bay and Carmel bay. Are these safe to swim in with a wetsuit I’ve heard mixed reviews.

If not, are there any places (ocean, lake, river, etc.) that are safe to swim in that is less than a 30 min drive away from

I tried out T&A Cafe BBQ akaKleinfelt Family BBQ. It was okay.

edit- I got the name wrong I APOLOGIZE it's Kleinfeldt

Recently there was a thread asking about good BBQ in the area. I was ready to jump in, as I have many times before, to say there isn't any. But people started mentioning a place I was completely ignorant of, the Tanimura & Antle Cafe has been taken over by a BBQ family and people are pleased with it. My brother, my dad, and I decided we'd see what we thought. The following is based on my personal opinions as someone who loves to smoke and BBQ.

First opinion is that it smelled great from the outside. As I stared at the menu everything spoke to me in a positive way as in I didn't see anything that looked like a bad idea. People I spoke to in line specifically praised the tri tip and the chicken. So we ordered a little of everything. A thing to note is this appears very much to be family run. As in most of the front of house appeared to be family, especially including Grandma Carol (might be Karol I didn't ask) who is this darling 83 year old lady with curly white hair and a big smile. We came at an off hour so she actually sat with us the entire meal to chat with us because ... she's just a happy fun person. I adored her.

In order of the pictures, the things we got were the whole tri tip sandwich with their version of "the works" which has a special name but I forgot. I got a side of Mac n Cheese.

The next is the 4 meat platter which included brisket, tri tip, chicken, a hot link, garlic bread, loaded fries, and the baked beans.

The last is my dad's bacon cheeseburger. Dad is not an adventurous eater.

We'll start with my tri tip. I loved it. Very juicy, tender, good crunch on the bread. Good balance of peppers that mixed it up. This is probably the best thing I tried. Would go back for the tri tip sandwich. Bread felt kind of like a Dutch Crunch almost like the ones from the Safeway bakery. It worked well in the sandwich because it held together and didn't get soggy. The Mac n Cheese tasted phenomenal. But, as you can see, the sauce has split. It's grainy, the noodles were almost mush, and there was a layer of grease at the bottom of the tray. But the taste salvaged it. Yeah, I'd probably even order those again. There's a nice amount of heat at the end, too. Technique could probably use some refining. All in all I was happy with my dish.

Next up the 4 meat platter. Tri tip excellent. No complaints there. The hot link had a nice slow burn of a little heat, not too much. The meat grind inside was a very fine grind. I personally like a coarser grind in a smoked sausage but that's personal preference. Also there wasn't much of a snap to the casing. So yeah it was a fine hot link but didn't stand out in any way. The brisket was a disappointment. You can see it in the top left. It looks like there's a bark but it doesn't really taste of smoke and pepper that you'd expect a good bark to have. Also, in my opinion, it was a little dry and bland. They offer a sauce to go with it which you can see in the little plastic cup. I did not care for the sauce. It just tasted like molasses and brown sugar. It cried out for balance from vinegar or another acid. I would pass on that sauce in the future, and since the brisket needs a sauce I'd probably pass on brisket going forward unless they've got some other sauce options. Chicken was great! Good level of smoke, good level of juicy. They're doing things right with the chicken. Beans were a miss. Very watery and just crying out for onions and peppers. Would not order beans. Could not taste any hint of garlic on the garlic bread. Would not order garlic bread again. And the loaded fries... it's like they spooned the beans over them. Which instantly made them soggy and taste like the beans I didn't like. Would not order loaded fries again.

Finally, the burger. I didn't try it because dad only orders well-done burgers. My brother took a bite and said the bacon was a good thick cut and balanced well. I'm being picky but I kinda hope a BBQ place might make their own pickles. These were straight out of Sysco along with a kind of sad generic tomato/red onion/lettuce thing. The fries were very crunchy and seasoned nicely.

Unrelated, but if you or anyone has ADA needs it may be tricky to get in because it's actually a fairly high curb from the ground to the sidewalk, so keep that in mind. All in all I would go back and explore more of the menu. Definitely would try some of the smoked chicken sandwiches, and also anything tri-tip.

Right now (12:45pm on 19 May 2026) the Monterey County Board of Supervisors is considering a resolution opposing the proposed Gilroy ICE facility.

Zoom link: https://montereycty.zoom.us/j/224397747

UPDATE: Supervisor Alejo introduced the motion to the MoCo Board of Supervisors:
- adopt a formal position against the proposed ICE detention center in Gilroy;
- transmit formal letters of opposition to federal and state legislative delegation and the federal government
- join any litigation initiated by the County of Santa Clara;
- work with the CA Dept. of Justice to challenge the legality and construction of the facility;
- direct HCD and the county council office to review county zone and land use laws to determine what protections can be instituted to prohibit any future immigration detention centers from being located within the county.

All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously.

Additionally, Supervisor Askew added for discussion actions the board can take but has chosen not to take: giving direction to Human Resources regarding the county's conflict of interest policy for the workforce, specifically in public safety moonlighting for employment with DHS, and the SCAAP contract that allows MoCo to share data about incarcerated individuals in jail with federal agencies.

Bird watching

I just got my very first pair of binoculars and I’ve been having a lot of fun sitting by the water observing wildlife. The otters, ducks diving for food, birds, I haven’t had luck catching any whales from shore though. For anyone who also enjoys this what are your favorite spots? I don’t have a car and get around on ebike so I can only go so far :/ This is genuinely so much fun though!

Veterinarian and euthanasia recommendations?

Hi everyone. I have had some issues with the veterinarian clinic I have been going to for years.

Long story short, my dog was recently diagnosed with cancerous lymphoma and I want to put him down before he starts to really suffer (we decided to not go with chemotherapy because he is 15 years old and has other health issues).

What places are available in Monterey county that can euthanize him as well as offer cremation packages that are less than $500? (big plus if open on the weekends).

I also have another dog and two cats; I took them to the same vet but I want to switch. I’m looking for a good vet in south monterey but I’m willing to go to salinas or prunedale as well. Big plus if affordable !

I do not want to go to my current vet as their prices are high and I have lost my trust in them.

If you can all let me know, thank you

Knife sharpening around here?

Is there a good/ cheap place to get knives/blender blades sharpened? Does the sharpener guy still show up to local farmer's markets?

Edit: thanks for the leads, everyone. Ace Hardware doesn't do blender blades, but I'll call Carmel Cutlery and perhaps visit the knife guy at the farmer's market.

Opposition grows over proposed ICE detention facility near Gilroy

GILROY, Calif. —
Plans to construct a federal ICE detention facility near Gilroy are sparking growing concern and opposition from local residents and officials. The proposed site, located on the 7,000 block of Holsclaw Road, could house an 18,000-square-foot facility, according to public documents.
Santa Cruz County Supervisor Felipe Hernandez said, "We should absolutely be concerned."

Hernandez added, "It's very concerning to us here because as it is, we have families that are scared to go to work. They're scared to send their children to school. They're scared that, you know, children are scared themselves, that their parents won't be home when they come home."

Public records show the federal government has leased the land from Elmwood Capital Group, based in Beverly Hills, and documents suggest ICE has signed a contract with a developer to build the detention center to support immigration enforcement efforts along the Central Coast.
Luis Alejo, Monterey County supervisor, said, "We think this would have the adverse impact and this fear would spread across all our counties. And that is why it is imperative right now that we do everything possible to stop this project. It is not what we need."

Protests have already begun, with demonstrators gathering outside the Santa Clara County offices in San Jose earlier this week.

County leaders, including Ken Christopher of Christopher Ranch, which employs one of the largest migrant workforces in Gilroy, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency.

"The problem right now is confusion, and that's the real problem. That's what's causing anxiety and causing pain and causing fear is because there's no clear answer," Christopher said.
Concerns have also been raised about whether the land can be rezoned to accommodate the facility and whether the federal government can override local control. Alejo said the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will consider approving a referral next week to support opposition to the plans.

"So that our county, the county of Monterey, could officially oppose and join Santa Clara in its opposition and join any efforts, whether it's joining litigation to stop the construction of this prison, immigration prison outside of Gilroy," Alejo said.
Opponents of the project have indicated they are prepared to fight the plans in court.

Does anyone remember this guy?

I grew up (part of the time) around here in the 70s & 80s and am wondering if anyone else remembers "Aloysius." Looked like R Crumb's 'Mr. Natural' (old guy with long white beard). Used to drive around (and maybe live in?) an old modified step van/what looked like a former ice-cream truck. A 'street preacher' type of fellow, often parked at major intersections in & around PG/Carmel/Monterey proselytizing to passing vehicles.

He once bounced a tennis ball at my grandmother's car, which was stopped in traffic at a light (maybe around Holman's Hwy & 1, or Carpenter & Cabrillo Hwy, when those intersections were tamer). And I, riding in the backseat with the window down, caught it! He had written on the ball in marker: "LOVE ONE ANOTHER." Another time I was hobbling around CHOMP on crutches with a broken toe and he tried to persuade adolescent me to let him, like, 'faith heal' me.

I think I recall that his initials were "AAA," like Aloysius A. [lastname starting with A]. And he might have even had "A.A.A." written on the outside of his step van.

What's jogging my memory & prompting this question is that I'm visiting my brother, who lives here now, and I see that the ballot for Calif governor lists 61 candidates. So the other thing I remember about Aloysius is that he would manage to get his name on the ballot for various political offices...and he always got a handful of votes! (My grandmother would scoff, and my grandfather would always say something like, "Well, that's three more votes than I got." Hint: Grandpa wasn't running.)

Any oldtimers on this sub? Or if you know an oldtimer, would you ask them: Who exactly was Aloysius, and what was his backstory? Surely something interesting...
