Has anyone experienced something similar?

We saw this with a friend a few years ago. We are in France, and I’m only giving a broad description here, without going into our emotions or many other details…
We were alone on a beach at night, looking at the stars and talking about philosophy, existence, love, creation, and things like that…
It was extremely bright, yet strangely not blinding at all. The surface looked metallic, but it was moving, almost as if it were covered with gasoline or oil, constantly shifting.
We were stunned by the incredible beauty of it. It was hypnotic.
We spent our time taking turns describing what we were seeing, just to make sure we were both actually seeing the same thing.
A kind of multicolored smoke/cloud/aura surrounded it, and the colors of this mist kept changing.
My friend is a doctor in nanotechnology, so he is someone very serious and pragmatic. Even he says he has never seen anything like it, nor understands how such a thing could exist.
Then it transformed into three green lights that rose into the sky and merged together while almost seeming to play around each other. The color then turned orange. After that, it disappeared.
We are not fixed on any particular explanation — we also wonder whether it could have been some kind of hallucination.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
