What were the longterm demographic and political effects of the population transfer / resettlement policies of the Neo-Assyrian Empire?
I’ve seen estimates that up to 4.4 million people were shipped around the Empire at various times, in an empire that had between 10-15 million people. Many of these people were of varying ethnicities (some related, some not), spoke different languages and prayed differently.
Was this noted afterwards? Did it significantly impact empires thereafter? Did people acknowledge having multiple distinct ethnic backgrounds in more mixed areas?
