Are there any artists that came from the past 20 years that have this very specific feeling?
Let me get this clear, I am not claiming to know every artist in the industry. That is why I am making this post so hopefully by tomorrow I'll have some new appreciation of todays artists. I am autistic so it's been very difficult for me to get out of the lifelong hyperfixation of the era that my mind is clearly stuck in. But I want to start giving other artists a chance. When an artist dies it's hard for me to listen to them without feeling intense grief so I want to surround myself with creativity of this time and not just the past.
David Bowie, Kate Bush, Thomas Dolby, Robert Plant, Robert Smith, Peter Murphy, (and hear me out) Danny Elfman all fit into a similar category of creativity where they transport you to a different dimension of their world. Are there any artists of todays music that manage to do that but into the similiar vibe as any of them?
I don't want to be left with AI music, industry plants and radio friendly copy and paste in 30 or so years when these precious artists are gone. Yes there are artists that try to emulate these artists but not many who have that I have noticed that have that layer of depth to transport you.
The only artists I can think of that emerged of the past 20 years that I can compare at all would be Connan Mockasin/Soft Hair and Mac Demarco. Tame Impala is notable because Kevin is some other level of genuis that is untouchable but there is a level of vulnerability that I feel lacks in his music. He is one of the most popular artists of today and I find it hard to connect with him in the same way as Mac Demarco. When I listen to Mac I feel like I am listening to friend tell a story, but Tame Impala almost feels cold from the perfectionism.
Going to a different kind of vibe but Thundercat and Tyler, the Creator are two of the other most creative men in the industry of the past 20 years. Any recommendations of artists that go to their level of innovation too will be greatly appreciated.
Also Zero 7 is pretty transporting but most of their music relies on whoever works on the specific track. Kind of like Gorillaz.
I want to know who I can expect I can still see in concert still 30 years when everyone else is gone and I am left with the dread of grieving an era. Obviously can't predict who will still be alive, but you know what I mean.
When I look up artists similar to Bowie of the past 20 years I get Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. I won't say anything further but...hmm...
EDIT: To the person that just DM'd me saying Aurora that's honestly a great suggestion. I'll be deep diving her!!!
character writing - trying to figure out what music they'd listen
i'm writing a story (just a little project for myself, not a book) set in nyc 1999-early 2000 (not the decade, the specific year) and i have a main character who especially expresses herself through the music she listens to as it also reflects her character arc (mostly female artists, predominantly hiphop but also r&b, then she later incorporates more soul, techno and rock) except i was not born in 2000 nor in america
i thought this would be the best place to ask for some recommendations of where to start for her and what would have been popular/available at the time? i've of course been looking at the staples of the genre, but it's hard to know what would have been actually accessible to her at the time (what cds/cassettes there were, i mean)
i do have a side character who is also music centric (he's sort of a mirror for her so more male artists for him, likely more techno and rap) so really any recs would do! sorry this is a weird question, i know haha
Help! I'm Obsessed with ELO
Just like the post says, I'm currently in my Electric Light Orchestra discovery phase, and I can't stop! I need more bands with a similar sound! PLS! Anyone?
songs about becoming a monster because you have nothing left
bonus points for people seeing you as a good person despite you knowing you aren't
putting together a playlist for a character and her fall from grace; only genre i'm not a huge fan of is rap, but i'm happy to branch out for character playlists. i'm most fond of what i call sad boy vibes (soft and acoustic) and emo/punk/goth, but theme is more important than genre
Niche rap albums to listen to?
looking to expand from my mainstream taste
I need pure 100% unfiltered hype
Ive been bouncing between flower man and you say run but the hype from them is beginning to run dry, and I need songs that will provide the hype I need to keep cooking up post it note doodles. Whatever you got, recommend it, I need fuel.
MUSIC RECOMMENDATION PLEASE
Hello. Lily chou chou is the only one who makes me feel when i listen to music. And mitski. Please give me recommendations.
I'm (a deadhead) looking for new styles of music to get into, please give me a genre and your favourite three songs in it!
reddit.comPlease recommend music based on these artists (60s early 70s)
This is for a playlist titled "60s and Early 70s" so please only suggest music from that era. As you will notice, the type of music that I listen to leans more on the "songy", "folksy", "artsy", "poppy", "psychedelic" side of things rather than the "bluesy", "soul", "motown", and even guitar driven hard rock stuff. But I am open to anything if it's good. So please feel free to take a quick glance at this list and if anything comes to mind please comment.

Modern era protest songs.
I'm trying to build a playlist with modern protest/anti-fascism songs. Back in the day we had stuff like "American Idiot" to protest Bush. That's the vibe.
So far I've got
- Don't Say No to Hitler by Seb Lowe
- No One to Kill in the Sky by Seb Lowe
- Backwoods Backwards by Bryan Andrews
- Rich People by Carsie Blanton
Edit: When I say "vibe" i don't mean limit it to punk like Green Day. All genres are welcome!
Recommend some music to listen to based of what I already listen to.
SEETHER, SUBLIME, NIRVANA, AC/DC, ALICE COOPER, WEEZER, OASIS, AND EVERCLEAR. THEN SOME ONE OF SONGS LIKE PARALYZER, DAY AFTER DAY, STUCK IN THE MIDDLE AND ETC…
Would love to hear some more music tn!
ISO metal songs with fun or danceable/party vibes
[note: this is kind of a crosspost of a post i made on another subreddit with a couple changes to the text. mods please let me know if i need to change the flair or anything, this is my first time posting to this sub]
the songs that i am looking to match the vibes of are "pizza" by attila and the more recent work of electric callboy (examples "hypa hypa", "elevator operator," "we got the moves") - songs that are maybe not so serious from a lyrical standpoint, and especially ones that i can add to my metal playlist that will have me dancing as i headbang. the only bands i do not want or need recommended are electric callboy and rammstein since i already listen to them both (please also no AI generated music; nobody has recommended any yet but i figured i'd mention it just in case); if attila has more songs that match what i'm looking for i will welcome those. here is a link to my metal playlist (spotify) if that helps to give a feel of what i'm looking for. thanks in advance!
(edit: link was wonky, fixed it)
Songs that feel like sinking below the surface of the water as the sun shines
I wish I could post pics here but what i’m talking about is a song where it feels like you’re sinking, looking up towards the surface of the water and see the sun shining through in ripples as that sight slowly is fading.
My best examples are absolutely peak but:
The beginning instrumental of Wish you were here by pink floyd
The “guitar fill” or “transition” instrumental in Run by snow patrol. Tbh maybe the entire ending of this song
Perfect Albums for long drive/ highway drive
I want some similar albums like first strokes album is this it kinda like that. Or any heavy metal, melodeath or powermetar for long highway driving
Pink floyd-esque vibe when sitting darkness or beside the pool albums
So i guess space rock is welcome to from any ither artist. But i want this kinda vibe either dsotm(dark side of the moon album.) or thid specific vibe but its not by pink Floyd but kinda almost sounds like them (it can be band or space rock i am open to all.)
Songs about time!
Hello all! Looking for some songs to do with time (in any capacity. As a concept, time travel, timepieces, etc.) I'm making a playlist based on a character I like whose story is very heavily centered around the idea of time travel with lots of clock imagery.
So far I have:
Monstrance Clock by Ghost
Ruler of Everything by Tally Hall
Clocks by Coldplay
My Time by Bo En
Hourglass by Set It Off
Time Machine by Miracle Musical
Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thank you!

edit: i need it to be AT LEAST 4 hours long
Pop Metal artists
Anyone have recommendations of pop metal artists like Vana, Scene Queen, Poppy (I Disagree era), Baby Metal?
I have a really hard time finding artists with this style of music, but those are some of my favorites
