I have a family member who was approved for SSDI this month May 2026 with Medicare showing starting date effective December 2025.

She has not received the backpay SSDI payment just yet.

She has insurance through Covered California and has been paying monthly, she receives government assistance towards her premiums. If she cancels Covered CA will they take back her government assistance dating back to December 2025? Even though her SSDI approval was this month? That would make no sense right?

If she decides to keep her CoveredCA insurance and cancel her Part B Medicare premium, will she be penalized for getting Part B at a later time?
