Am I overreacting or is this excessive rust for a new vehicle?
We bought a brand new car from Myers Kanata in August/September 2025, and during our tire change this April/May, we noticed one of the exhaust pipes underneath the vehicle was already very rusted.
Before anyone says “all exhausts rust,” we compared it to our 2012 Accent and also to a several-years-old Kona owned by a family member, and neither of them look anywhere near as rusted as this new vehicle does. That’s what made us concerned in the first place.
We brought the vehicle in for a warranty inspection, and the dealership told us it was “normal” and only “surface rust.” They said they sent pictures to Hyundai Canada, but they came back saying it’s not covered. It honestly, it feels hard to accept that explanation when an older 2012 vehicle and another older Hyundai both look significantly better underneath than a car that’s less than a year old.
We understand some surface rust can happen in Canada because of moisture and road salt, but this seems excessive for such a new car.
I talked to the manager and he said all of their cars look like that, which for me doesn’t seem normal. They said they couldn’t do anything but submit the claim over and over to HYUNDAI CANADA.
Has anyone else experienced this with newer vehicles recently?
Is the quality of exhaust materials getting worse?
At what point should customers actually push back on this instead of just accepting “surface rust” as normal? Can anyone tell me how to proceed?
Would appreciate hearing other people’s experiences, especially from anyone in Canada dealing with similar issues.
