Am I annoying my contractor?

Need some serious advice. We hired a contractor for a tenant improvement, medical related. Small space 1000sqft.

We got many difference quotes ranging from $160k-450k.

Husband and I agreed to go with the lowest bid, expecting it to be a bit of a shit show. But since we're both relatively free at this time, decided it'll be ok, we will work closely with the contractor to make sure things are getting done.

Anyway. My husband constantly messaged and called the contractor to ask what he's doing, who he's hiring, when people are coming to do work, etc etc. IDK what exactly happened, but this contractor got admitted to Psych Unit for 2 weeks..maybe more, due to stress.

Literally we had no clue what happened, he wasn't answering messages or phone calls.

We somehow managed to find contact info of another contractor he usually collaborates on projects and that's how we found out about the hospitalization.

This new guy says he was asked to take over the project. We've met him before, so we know he works with the previous guy.

And it's the same thing. There's barely any communication from this guy. So husband insists I call this guy to ask questions (we speak the same language, his English is no good).

Example: have you figured out who the HVAC person is, when is he coming for walkthrough, when is he coming to do the job. What about electric, what about cabinets, should we be ordering them now because of lead time., etc etc

This guy isn't very communicative, that's why we ask these questions. We ask for an update every day, but he never gives us an update, unless I call or text.

I'm certain we're annoying to work with. But help me understand, why these guys don't communicate? I want them to send me a text to update what's happening behind the scenes. Is it so hard to do that?

Help me understand the mind of contactors, please. What is normal?
