What Tom Boogizm taught me about genre
I saw Tom Boogizm DJ for the first time last week in London, and it blew me away. He somehow made a meld of dancehall, techno, UK rap, bassline, soul, rock and more feel like an obvious journey.
It got me thinking about the currency of genre in dance music; how we sometimes use it as evidence of fluency or evidence of knowledge. Tom Boogizm proved to me that using genre in this way is definitely futile and counter-intuitive.
