I’m a rising sophomore by year, and I’m unsure if I should take ENGR 1304 or MECE 2261. ENGR 1304 is on the 2025 degree plan and MECE 2261 is on the 2026 degree plan.
Im going to glue it regardless, but I was thinking about adding a wedge to limit the handle from rotating. But, since it’s so close to the edge, i wasn’t sure if the wedge would cause the curved part of the handle to split.
I will add a second curved piece, but I’m not quite done with it yet.
I know that i probably shouldn’t have burnished it so much since I haven’t attached the handle yet, but I got ahead of myself.
I milled and worked everything by hand from logs (except some course sanding via a belt sander), and made my own stain from scratch. Harvested pine resin, turned it to pine tar, mixed it with linseed oil and beeswax, and applied.
I make my own linseed oil/pine tar wood finish from scratch and have previously used synthetic brushes for applying my finish while hot. One time though, I applied it too hot and the bristles basically burned, curled, and got extremely hard.
I typically do very fine sanding (all the way to 2500 grit) after I apply the finish cause I adore the shine it gives. Would it matter if I used synthetic or natural bristle brushes in this case?
Also, if any of y’all have any other misc tips on applying hot finishes in general, then I’d love to hear them.
I was carving a mortise into live oak with a 1/4” dewalt chisel depicted and the flaws began to show in the chisel after a while after buying it (I almost exclusively used that chisel for live oak btw). First it developed a very noticeable bow in it, then the tip broke off. Then, after I ground on a new edge, in the same day, it broke much further up the chisel. At most an inch up from the edge.
How does one prevent this?
Cut and sanded each plank myself with hand tools. Got the wood from my own Texas Live Oak tree. Found out that it’s extremely overkill for a shield cause I used Phoenician joints to connect the boards and will use dowels to reinforce the edge boards
Im wanting to make a small canoe this summer that can sit on a desk, but I want to make it in the same way that someone makes a full size canoe because I want to get practice before making the full thing.
How exactly would you bend the wood more aggressively at the bow and stern?
Also, how would you connect the end grains of the boards midway through the hull?
I work primarily with hand tools I will say, but I have a belt sander.
