Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 ... what exactly do I have here?
I purchased this Winchester Model 70 30-06. The serial number dates it to 1961. It is in what appears to be as-new condition, almost too good to be true. I can see no trace of refinishing of the wood or metal and the bluing has a matte receiver with a polished bolt, barrel and bottom metal as I have been told the pre-64 models were finished.
The follower and receiver rails have only the slightest witness marks like a new gun that has only had the bolt cycled a few times. The stock has some nice figuring which I am told is uncommon on pre-64 models when wood blanks were prized for having straight, uniform grain especially in the wrist area.
Would you say this rifle was refinished and restocked, or in its original condition?
