I have always been beyond endeared by the photos of this moment where Hoshoryu’s parents kissed his cheeks when he became Yokozuna, so I spent a long time trying to recreate it

I started this piece before the last Basho, and unfortunately the perception of Hosh seems to have shifted a little between then and finishing it so I was a little hesitant to post,, but my love for Hosh has not waned!! (I just want him to shape up and be his healthiest and strongest!!!)

This is far from a hot take now, but I was very charmed by Shishi this past basho, so this of course I had to draw him. I really hope that this will be a confidence boost for him and he’ll continue to come into his own (and out do Aonishiki cough cough lol)

I was overcome with the spirit of the drunk puppy and whipped this bad boy out in like 40 minutes at work lol

Couldn’t find a proper source (OR the image in high quality) but the reference image was in * this * article about female sumo wrestling! (Worth a read!)

I truly think Syunrai is the most adorable, but my kryptonite is that I don’t think my drawings of him ever turn out just right. But it didn’t stop me from trying!! Someday I’ll perfect Mr. Springtime Thunder lol

I love this big guy, and the video Tatsunami posted last night was great, I love seeing our guys having a good night out (even if it was like 4 months ago lol)

Lowkey I feel like the “official” drawings they (the JSA??) do for official merch feels samey and isn’t too recognizable, so I spent this basho working through and drawing caricatures of every rikishi that’s cracked maegashira since mid 2025, even if it was just for 1 basho. (I’m sure inevitably somebody was missed, but I tried to be thorough!)

I wanted to post them before labeling and coloring everyone to see if you all thought any were recognizable! Lmk what you think (or who you think I missed lol)

Once I get done coloring I’ll post them with their names!

The Tatsunami video from 4 days ago celebrating Kokuryunami’s birthday brought me to tears! I just really adore how much his stable mates appreciate and respect him. He seemed so excited during their birthday butsukari drills, and everyone seemed really pumped for him being sparring in a mawashi for the first time in years. It was strong contrast from his usual Eeyore/cynical disposition lol. It really warms my heart.

(I also really loved all the pokemon diamond and pearl talk at the beginning of the vid. I’d kill to know his team, I think it would be great to draw him as a trainer)

I have high hopes for him this basho! Hopefully he gains some kind of psychic boost from me drawing him for days and days lol

Help me choose!! (And I’m very open to other pics if you have any that fit the vibe, pls share!!) Here are some photos from my collection I think would make for good pencil drawings (I attached some of my drawings and WIPs at the end for style reference lol)

The criteria is very loose and more vibe based than anything. I’m shooting for something dynamic, has a couple rikishi interacting with each other in some way (peaceful or violent haha), preferably with at least one face visible. I’m a newer fan so I’m more inclined toward currently active wrestlers lol

Tobizaru and Ura have captured my heart, and I knew I had to draw an iconic Ura backbend! I heard a commentator call this fight the “battle of the tricksters” and he couldn’t be more right. I am really happy with this as my first actual fight drawing!

I’ve been watching Tatsunami Stable for months nowand I’ve noticed they sometimes will call each other Shibacchi, does anyone know what it means? It seems like they’ve called multiple different wrestlers and staff this, and any googling (even in hirigana lol) I do only leads to “grass plot” which I feel isn’t right lol.
Does anyone have any insight?

Are you able to tell who these are before I get to the faces? I feel like this one will take forever, but I’m happy with it so far! I’m always on the lookout for sick action shots like these if anybody has some favorites 👀
