Apparently Good Morning Baltimore has one special note that changes the whole song?

And yes, to be clear, I made this video :)

Any other musical songs I should dissect?

And the grand winner of the Ultimate Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical Vote is…

Jesus Christ Superstar!!

While I am glad (it is my favorite musical of all time), I would also like to give a huge shoutout to Phantom of the Opera! It has singlehandedly brought millions of people to Andrew Lloyd Webber, and has some undoubtedly incredible stage design and music.

The vote was really close, at 12-10. Heres the list of musicals in order of how far they got in the vote: The Beautiful Game, The Likes of Us, Bad Cinderella, Tell Me On A Sunday, Wizard of Oz, Whistle Down the Wind, Starlight Express, By Jeeves, Aspects of Love, Stephen Ward, Cats, Joseph, Sunset Boulevard, The Woman in White, Evita, Love Never Dies, School of Rock, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar!

Here are the reasons why fans like Phantom: ”The disappearance trick [is] my favourite part,” “All I could think about was how stunning the stage and the costumes [were] and how beautiful the overture was,” “I felt like I could relate to the Phantom,” “[Phantom] was… my first real introduction to a Broadway show,” “I sat right under the chandelier and had the time of my life,” “The imagery of Masquerade,” and “[It has] a haunting soundtrack that stays with you after the musical has ended.”

Reasons why fans like Jesus Christ Superstar: “There has never been another musical quite like it,” “The guitar f***s extremely hard,“ “Loved it since listening to my parents’ vinyl of the original concept recording,” “Every Judas song is my favorite,” “Genuinely just blown away… the first time I saw it in person,” “I felt like my third eye was opened,” “ALW goes angsty,” “It has more than just 3 songs over and over. No I’m joking, but yeah it has better music in my opinion,” and “I appreciate the versatility of each production and the way it helped usher in the rock musical.”

To celebrate, we will have a Jesus Christ Superstar-themed week here on the sub, and we will do this vote again next year! We’ll see how/if things change! Thank you so much to everyone who voted. 🗳️

FINAL VOTE! Jesus Christ Superstar VS Phantom of the Opera!

Please tell your friends about this vote too, and if they ask "Who's Andrew Lloyd Webber?", eat all the food in their house, stub their toe, and then force them to watch both musicals and have them vote!

I will give this vote two days.

Round 4 Results!

Jesus Christ Superstar (3; tied)

Phantom of the Opera (3; tied)

Love Never Dies (1)

School of Rock (2)

Regarding the weird three finalists, I think I'm just going to eliminate School of Rock, because in all honesty it keeps tying, but I keep voting for it so that's what's pushing it over the edge. I'll try to advertise the big FINAL VOTE a bit and we'll let it go for a couple days. I'm super excited; I know both of these shows are SUPER popular!!

Underrated Musical of the Week: The Magic Show

The Magic Show is Stephen Schwartz’s (Wicked, Prince of Egypt, Pippin) third musical, featuring live magic performed by Doug Henning! I often feel that composers start out simple and get more and more complex as the years go by, until they realize that simpler songs tend to be hits, and then they write simpler. This is Schwartz’s climax (at least rhythmically), and I love love LOVE IT! 😍 Almost every song is a banger, and try to watch the proshot, because the magic is truly amazing.

The book is rather weak, though, and Schwartz won’t let it be performed until they can rewrite it, so that’s why no one’s heard of it, even though it ran 1920 performances on Broadway.

I had a dream I got to meet ALW in person and interview him

I dreamt that every few weeks my family and I would take a trip to a different part of the state (which is weird cause ALW is British) and there was this spot that I would like to go to, and that ALW would also sometimes go there! He even had a fancy collection of dinosaur bones that I would climb on (rude). Well, one day, I'm invited into his house by one of his butlers and when I meet him I interview him! He lets me record it, but only the audio.

I asked him who his inspirations were and he couldn't answer it. "All of them" or "none of them" or something like that. I asked him if he ever wanted to write lyrics, and he told me "oh I'm actually really good at writing lyrics! I always write lyrics to my tunes before the lyricist replaces them with their own stuff!"

Flocabulary 8 Times Table Rap [partially lost]

I know Flocabulary (the educational rap animation site) is infamous for deleting and updating their raps, and I often go searching online for this video, which I‘ve never been able to find. The beat had an epic piano part (7 fast notes) and the opening line was something like “hey kid do ya know about your eights?” “Yeah I know about my eights, and I feel great!” “Well, I bet I know my eights better than you” etc.

I was in first or second grade when I watched this, so that would’ve been about 10 years ago. I‘d be super grateful if anyone could find it!

ALW musical general vote results!

Two weeks ago I posted a vote where instead of putting two musicals up against each other, you got to rank all of them on a scale of 1-5, and here are the results!

Jesus Christ Superstar: 4.8 (13 votes)

Phantom of the Opera: 4.5 (13 votes)

Evita: 4.4 (13 votes)

Sunset Boulevard: 4.3 (12 votes)

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: 4.0 (13 votes)

Cats: 3.6 (13 votes)

Starlight Express: 3.5 (12 votes)

School of Rock: 3.4 (10 votes)

Tell Me on a Sunday: 3.3 (12 votes)

Love Never Dies: 3.2 (13 votes)

The Woman in White: 3.1 (12 votes)

Aspects of Love: 3.0 (10 votes)

Whistle Down the Wind: 3.0 (10 votes)

By Jeeves: 2.8 (10 votes)

Wizard of Oz: 2.2 (9 votes)

Stephen Ward: 2.1 (8 votes)

Jeeves: 2.0 (8 votes)

The Likes of Us: 2.0 (6 votes)

Bad Cinderella: 1.8 (9 votes)

The Beautiful Game: 1.6 (8 votes)

Fun fact: I was the only person to vote Phantom as a 1 (sorry)

Note: There was one person who just doesn't like ALW for some reason and only voted from 1-4, and another person that, unless their favorite ALWs are The Beautiful Game and Bad Cinderella and they really hate Phantom and JCS*, I'm assuming they've put in their answers backwards.*
