Replacing 2022 Toyota Corolla Caliper
I made an expensive mistake trying to change my brake pads.
My wife drives a 2018 Mazda and I know to put the car into maintenance mode before trying to change the brake pads but with this being my first time changing them on my Corolla I didn't think to see if there was a maintenance mode.
Once I had the wheel off and the caliper removed, I could not get the piston to budge to fit on the new brake pads. After looking online, I realized the answer is that I never put it into maintenance mode.
Being lazy, I decided to crank the car up without putting the old brake pads and the caliper back on. As a result, the brakes automatically engaged once the car started up and the piston fully extended and I got a dash warning that the parking brake was unavailable.
I got the epb motor detached but I'm having no luck with getting the piston back into a position to put the caliper back on. The boot is still attached and it's not actively leaking fluid, I just can't get it to retract. I've thought about just ordering a new caliper and replacing it all together but now I'm seeing that I might need a scanner to reset the car.
At this point do I just cut my losses and get it towed to a shop? I don't know if I see a world where I would regularly need a scanner tool
