UCSD vs USC — stuck between two very different decisions (political science, possible law path)
Hey everyone,
I’m currently trying to decide between UC San Diego and USC for Political Science, and I’m genuinely stuck. I’ve already submitted intent to enroll at both and completed most early onboarding steps, so I need to finalize soon.
Here’s my situation:
UCSD: Fall admission, would start earlier. Strong political science program (more analytical/quant-heavy). I also have a friend I’d likely be rooming with, and I’ve already coordinated housing plans with them. UCSD also aligns with a study abroad program in Denmark I’m interested in doing in spring.
USC: Spring admission. Very strong alumni network, especially for internships and LA connections, which could matter for law school goals. Campus culture and social life seem like a much better fit for me personally. However, I’d be entering later, housing is less predictable for spring transfers, and study abroad would likely happen later.
Academics: Both are strong for political science. UCSD is slightly higher ranked and more analytical; USC is more traditional writing/discussion-based. I’m planning on potentially going to law school, so GPA + LSAT performance matters a lot to me.
Social life: I think USC fits my personality better socially, but I also know I’d have at least one close friend at UCSD from the start.
Main dilemma: UCSD feels more structured, cheaper, and includes the Denmark study abroad path I like. USC feels like a better social fit with stronger networking, but less certainty in housing and timing.
At this point, I’m trying to understand:
How much do these differences actually matter in reality?
Does USC’s network/social environment meaningfully outweigh UCSD’s structure and earlier start?
For law school outcomes, does either choice really give an edge?
Would really appreciate honest input from people who’ve been in similar decisions or attended either school.
Thanks.
