Marine fossils have been found on mount Everest
Mount Everest is famous today as the highest mountain on Earth, rising nearly 8,849 metres above sea level. Yet the rocks near its summit preserve a remarkable secret: they contain fossils of marine organisms that lived in ancient seas hundreds of millions of years ago. This means that some of the material now exposed near the top of Everest was originally deposited in a marine environment long before the Himalayas existed.
