Seasonal contract hire requesting transfer to overnight team
Hello Everybody,
To keep this brief, I was hired back in march on contract in the seasonal department. I’ve been there just over two months now, working full & part-time hours. Whatever is available. My managers seem very impressed with my performance so far.
About almost two weeks ago now, I unfortunately have a caught a sinus infection, as well as the fact that have struggles with migraines and might be developing some environmental allergies as I’ve never had experience working outside as consistently as I have been before. This has made my migraines much more painful and frequent.. weather changes and high sensory environments unfortunately are common triggers that impact the migraines.
I briefly had a discussion with my manager this week, I went into the conversation ready to quit as my anxious brain thought; if I obviously cannot meet or am struggling the performance and demands of my position, this won’t wouldn’t work out. I understand this is quite literally one of the busiest times of the year, especially in the garden centre and I was specifically hired to help manage that demand temporarily. I’ve already done quite a bit of extra training for the live goods specialist, and I genuinely enjoy my position all around. I’ve learned so much so far, and I personally love the crazy busyness as it keeps me busy.
With saying that, my condition unfortunately causes me limitations to consistently and efficiently perform in my position. I really want to stay on with my current position, though I feel I would benefit from being given the opportunity to try out in another department, specifically on the overnight team.
I understand the overnight teams work hard, they have demands to meet as well, and it is not an easy job by all means.
A lower-intense environment, being inside (unfortunately), task-focused work and having a more fixed schedule I feel would help me manage my overall health, allowing me contribute and perform better.
This was the position I originally applied for, but was offered seasonal instead. I hoped that outdoor environment wouldn’t have affected the state of my migraines like it has.
My store manager has been extremely understanding about illness and gave me a week off provided a have a doctors note, no problem. Got some antibiotics today, should be feeling better in terms of congestion real soon.
I went into my store today, to drop off the note, hoping to have a conversation with somebody about my situation, and if they’d be willing to try me out on the overnight team, or even in another department.
I know that I would be much better off long-term both health and performance wise.
There are no current internal or external openings for any department listed at my store or the next closest location. I’m afraid they won’t have anything open which I know is certainty a possibility and I am not expecting to be accommodated immediately or at all to be quite frank considering I’m still under 3-month probation and I’m under contract.
Only two assistant managers were in today, and they were extremely occupied with it being the long weekend.
My HR manager is on leave.
I thought about calling my manager and asking when a good time would be for him for me to come in drop off the note and have a conversation.
How do I go about having this conversation appropriately? Is it even worth it? I know every store and manager are different and I honestly don’t know until I ask.
Just wondering If anybody else has gone through a similar situation in the past.
Sorry for the stressy rant, I really don’t want to lose my place there.
