chess help (DND 5E)

i'm planning to give my table a puzzle based on chess, more specifically, it is chess, but it is similar to the living chess from No Game No Life episode 4 where the chess pieces have their own will, turning this less of a chess game, and more of a war simulation (pieces will disobey orders if they're being told to sacrific themselves for no reason, players can boost morale with an inspiring speech, etc)

the goal of the puzzle is to have them slowly realize they're not playing chess, and they need to think outside the box to win

i also want to make it so the turn player becomes the king on the chessboard, allowing my players to tag in and out on the board so they can join the fight (with their own skills and stats) as well

i'm going to use normal monsters for the chess pieces. i have Soldier ( https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/175769-soldier ) for pawns, and Knight ( https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/4904816-knight ) for knights. but what would the rook, bishop, and queen pieces be?

i bought this Day 1 on the top off website

i originally posted this in the official subreddit, but figured i'd post this here as well to vent

the last of the riftcrystals from this purchase has ran out today. needless to say, i don't think i will be continuing NTE if they keep adding garbage updates. the Bagel update? absolute trash. the race event? trash (what kind of game ties the vehicle handling to the framerate?!?). Fight Club? trash

maybe Endfield has spoiled things for me, but the single character combat system is overdone and absolute garbage

this game was suppose to be Anime GTA. it was advertised as Anime GTA. yet none of the things that make GTA what it is are even present in NTE. the Pink Paws Heist would have been great if they followed the GTA Online formula of heist setups and prep missions before the big finale, but its just a boring grindfest of follow this one route for 100k~150k fons a run, and repeat it 10 times

now the sidequestsin NTE are absolutely amazing and well written, and are a nice love letter to anime, but they're often ruined by garbage and unoptimized game mechnanics

i spent $1000 on this game on release. i played it everyday since release, grinding out my dailies. i wanted to chill and collect waifus and explore, but honestly i feel like i've gotten zero value for this game since Lacrimosa's banner since it's been nothing but crappy event after crappy event that relies on having other players

this is $1000 stretch out over two months. i could probably stretch it out more if i ignore the skins, but our FOMO economy ridicules us for not having skins. the no 50/50 is utterly meaningless when the skins still need 120 pulls

NTE has so much potential, but it's just absolutely plagued with poor game design choices and events. i wanna whale, but this game isn't really giving me any reason to stick around for the long term

need help with possible plothole

DND 5E/5.5E hybrid ruleset

i am planning to give my players trust issues. i gave them a quest to investigate an entire village that has gone missing. when they arrive at the village's supposed location, there will be a lone tavern. if they enter the tavern, an entire village will pop up around them, but they won't know until they look outside. basically, the entire village is a giant mimic

now players, being players, naturally they'll want to explore the village, but i'm trying to keep them contained to the tavern. my idea was if they tried to head out into tbe village, they'll eventually realize that no matter how much they walked, the village never gets any closer, while the tavern continues to be right behind them as if they never left at all

my goal is to have the players explore the tavern, and eventually realize the tavern and the village is one giant mimic that make them go "oh f***" and hopefully scare them into running away from the area as fast as they can

its this last part that i think would cause a potential plothole in my encounter. if the players know they can't run away from the tavern to explore the village, i don't think they're going to try running away because they'll think they can't run away

any ideas on how to fix this?

Tavern Mimic/Village Mimic

i'm looking for a particular map, maybe one of you awesome map makers might be able to help me locate something

i'm planning on giving my players trust issues. i'm sending them to investigate a missing village. at the location of the villlage, they'll find a lone tavern/inn. if they go inside, an entire village will pop up around the inn while they are inside, and they'll only notice it when they leave the inn. it'll seem like a normal village, but with quirky NPCs that all act weird. and hopefully, after my players do some investigating, i give them the big reveal that the entire village - all the NPCs, the buildings, the furniture, everything - is one big giant and extrenely hungry mimic

i think i would need two maps - a normal village map, and a mimicfied village map

or a tavern - i'll accept a tavern and a mimicfied version of the tavern as well, provided it has multiple floors and a cellar (i'm imagining the cellar to be deep and cavernous, with a pool of acid at the bottom, to drive home the idea that the cellar is the mimic's stomach)

paid or free maps, it doesn't matter - i just need to find something before next Friday

thanks!

sleepy players

i have a player in my campaign who works night shifts, that when it's time for the session, he'll very often fall asleep right in the middle of the session. now, it's totally understandable - he works late, and real life absolutely comes first, but that also means he dozes through a lot of the things that are going on during the session

the player wants to continue the campaign, and i would love it if he engaged more with the campaign, but coffee and energy drinks don't seem to work for him. changing the time unfortunately isn't a viable option neither since it's the only time when everyone at the table is free

any ideas on how i can help my player stay engaged without affecting his health or mental wellbeing?
