Hey everyone, my dog and best friend of 10 years was recently diagnosed with stage 5 B-cell lymphoma. She’s been by my side through all the highs and lows the last 10 years have thrown my way and now I’m trying everything I can to try and help her out through the hardest time of her life. She has so much more life to live and deserves as much time as possible. I’ve never had to ask for any sort of help before but unfortunately insurance will only cover £5k out of her £8k 25 week treatment plan, leaving me to pay the remainder as well as a 20% copayment for every session.
Everything is detailed in the link provided, any help or even just sharing the link with anyone who you know might be interested is appreciated more than I can say. Thank you 🤎
Hey all, I recently discovered this sub and wanted to share my little rescue chi with you! He’s been a part of the family for 14 months now and has fit right into our household (we have one other 10yr old small female yorkie type dog who I’ve had since she were a baby).
We rescued him from a pretty bad situation in which he’d ended up at a kill shelter with a lot of banned breeds and a lot of his background is still unknown to us, when we first got him we thought we’d be giving him a nice retirement / some comfortable twilight years, assuming he was elderly (the last image shows how he looked the first day he came to us — a couple of cigarette burns on his back, one completely bloodshot eye, no hair on his ears as they’d gone hard and leathery with small patches of them physically falling away, kennel cough and the list continues!). However to our surprise at our first vet trip with him they estimated his age to be around 1.5-2 years!
Since being in our care and being given all the vaccinations, love and care etc that he needed he has come such a long way and now we can 100% believe that he’s only young, no more being slow and timid, he’s the most playful energetic little dog I’ve ever had. Looking back it breaks my heart to think how he must’ve lived before, he had no idea how to play with a toy and couldn’t figure out how he was supposed to sleep in a dog bed (we do know he previously slept in a cage on a sheet of newspaper, in which he also was left to mess himself). Despite his rough start to life he truly is the most affectionate, loyal little boy. I had no idea chihuahuas were so clingy, he just wants to be sat on either me or my partner at all times, following us from room to room, grabbing our hands when he is sat on us to ask (demand) for more pets. It warms my heart to know that despite the awful was he still was treated, he still adores people and wanted to give them a second chance.
I didn’t know anything about chichis before he came into our life and I’ll admit I’d assumed they were snappy little things (purely based on videos etc I’d seen) and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I didn’t think I’d ever have another pup as affectionate as my yorkie but he’s definitely trying to give her a run for her money!
We’ve definitely had a few challenges along the way which to be honest, given his background we’d anticipated far worse. Toilet training him is still an ongoing battle and we’re as strict with his schedule as we physically can be but if anybody has any tips or tricks I’d absolutely welcome them. He also eats so quickly to the point I’m afraid he’s going to choke, I don’t know if that’s because he’s afraid we’re going to take it away from him or what but I’ve never seen something so tiny inhale food so quickly.
He’s been to two different veterinary practises and has been to the groomers several times since we’ve had him and every single time he’s been seen the staff / vets etc have all made comment on his colouring with them all stating that they’ve never come across a chihuahua his colour before. Is there a chance he could be mixed with anything else? Is it actually uncommon for them to have this colouring? I’d assumed the vets would have made some sort of mention if he were anything other than chi but they’ve got him registered as only that. He’s also not been neutered, the vet suggested we leave him that way as to not risk changing his behaviour (my female dog has been spayed and he’s also never displayed any type of sexual behaviour at all, not even once). Is this something we should consider or just leave it? He’s my first male dog so I just want to do right by him.
Any tips / tricks / advice when it comes to these beautiful little dogs is more than welcome. We’re still learning and I thought this sub would be a good place to ask! 🩶
